Man, this is giving me too much of the feels. So far we have seen the chill/laidback & badass versions of Shanks. Never such a vulnerable version. So he’s lowkey self-loathing and has a bad HABIT of regretting where he came from. Great. Not like I didn’t expect it but it’s a whole other thing to see it in the source material. How can someone so warm and confident be like this underneath ??? He probably also thought he’s not worthy to go after the one piece and someone like Ace with the correct lineage should do it. Hmm I wonder if he grew out of it a bit, or if it’s still the same right now ? Poor baby. This only makes me love him more though. And Gaban is the best dad figure. So far he beats Rayleigh and Roger combined. Idc what anyone says it’s the factsss.

Poor Shanks. He grew up with so many amazing father figures and still he had to suffer like this because of who is biological father is.

another thing i wanted to note was when shanks was angry, it wasn't shamrock he remembered. he remembered garling. he remembered garling trying to drag him back in and lure him in with classic narcissistic and abusive parent tactics by saying he would give shanks anything he wanted. shanks knows shamrock isn't at fault for being the way that he is. does he have resentment towards shamrock? possibly, especially since he is still a celestial dragon and has done horrific things, no doubt. he has rightful grudges. but from what we've sen so far, the hate and malice is directed towards garling, first and foremost, and then the world government and what institutions like what the holy knights and world nobles stand for.

included two different translations below bearing the same sentiment of garling's words and how much he tried to lure shanks back in. this is also a clear insight as to how garling must have raised shamrock to think, contributing more to the analyses i've had before as to how shamrock views the rest of the world as alien and was raised sheltered. the translation on the right bears the same sentiment as the one on the left, but displays exactly why shanks desperately needed an out: "you're free now." = i can finally control you.
