Oo! I just thought of something terrible and compelling so I have to inflict it upon you all.

What if the people who tried to protect the kids while they were growing up, are the ones who survived and formed a pirate crew in honor of the kids that didn't make it? Not a fully fleshed out idea but just,

What if Sanji starved to death? And Zeff put off his peace in the east blue to carry a little boy's dream to the All Blue?

What if Heriluk cheated death one more time and Choper died from the injuries he got when retrieving the mushroom.

What if Arlong killed the girls anyway because an adult woman can go to work now and earn them money but kids won't do him any good for years. Bellemare becomes a pirate hunter.

Usopp never gets to meet his father. He got sick and his mother sets out to sea to find his father.

Kuina lives and Zoro dies, but he believed in her and she's not going to let his faith be for nothing. Zoro was going to be the first person to beat her. He's gone now but no one is ever going to take his spot.

Big Tom is an old man and he hates that Franky died under his train right before the Fishman escaped. That boy never got to sail a ship across the world, so he and Iceberg will go for him.

Nico Robin burned with Ohara, but her mother carries her memory, and the memory of all the citizens with her as she continues her mission to uncover the truth.

And Dadan hadn't planned to be king of the pirates but what else could she do?

I am emotional over the fact that Franky was thrown in the sea by his parents because he was annoying, and yet never mind how difficult young Franky could be Tom never thought less of him and was never less affectuous I wonder if at some point Franky was just testing his limits on purpose and Tom was just like :D

I'm screaming incoherently about FMA:B Franky. He's amazing! I need to know more about him.

Oh he's great! I will grant you his full backstory in a brief shortenage.

He's the vice chief of the town. It used to be called Ennies but after the attack of government on it Franky took control over it, kicking the major Spandam who sold them (he took the money from gov to stay silent about the attack long before it happened and didn't let any soldier who stationed there help them) and taking his place together with Iceberg, changing it's name on Water 7, memento to his master. He is as well the quality inspector for workshops in the town non formally. He specialises in the most complicated automails like organ replacement and such.

He's half ishvalian, one of those who run away from the war and stick to this town. Because of that there's so many ishvalians in the story, since most of them comes from this town. He was saved by the unit of special army called Ocean, each squad had in the name Water and a number. As you might deduct one of them was Water 7 and in it was Tom.

He was a mechanic of the squad, ready to repair any engine what wasn't working, same as automails. He was excellent in it and such. While travel back to Donbachi (the country where everything happens) Tom showed how stuff worked around to cheer him up at least a little bit after how he was separated from his parents who probably didn't survived. Franky wasn't green to all of that, he was an amateur mechanic at home, building things despite unnerving stares of elders at home. He was great in his work but didn't had much support there. Plus he was not the smallest, he was around 18 years old at that time. After leaving Ishval he was left without nose, with crushed chin, shattered legs and arms what after curing were barely capable of work, putting him on a wheelchair for long. Despite that he could work under inventions with need of help for physical capability by.

Through that time, as well as Tom's visits in town, Franky started to take him as him mentor and he him as his student, seeing how well he grows in his born talent. Franky always enjoyed time spent with him, joyfully showing him his work. While Tom was not in town he was under protection of Iceberg, who was an adopted son of Tom, and Kokoro, wife of Tom. They gave him shine to his eyes and never pushed on him automail, even if it would make his life much easier. He didn't seen any nead for it, so far as he had them all.

One day yet the whole special army Ocean has gone "dismissed" and yet no soldier from it came back, what everyone in the Water 7, who were the closest to soldiers, took as a red flag. From that time they started to look suspicious at the government, thought after what happened in Amestries. Soon after that they got information that all Ocean soldiers were stated as dead. With that thing on mind, Franky worked hard to be with everything on point with his work, learning from Iceberg, who at that time was much better in those puzzles, and other mechanics who were friends of Tom. Since he met Tom he didn't paid attention to other people in the town besides him, his family and Tom's friends.

He became gloomy, pensive and straightforward ready to create a weapon to get rid of anything that would try to do something people of this city as they did to Tom. It was the first time when he felt week and without any possibility that he can do anything he wants to. With a threatening temper and need to do something he became one of the greatest mechanics in the town. It was like that untill he didn't met tiny Usopp and Kidd who were watching him from distance, worried about him, finally coming to him a bit after their mother died, trying to cheer him up in their own way: by showing him their ideas.

Since both boys were madly talented and crafty he saw potential in their ideas and fact that they were eager to make for him automail and limb support automail what was their first project together. They were following quite blindly since Franky's philosophy fitted so well to their believes. Iceberg was always sceptical to his way of thinking yet he couldn't help but enjoy his face lit up again, even if the light was slightly different from the old one. Neatherless he couldn't stop him and his new two followers to engage him to that project as well. After recuperation and two new apprentices he felt that he could do everything, teaching them everything he knew and making them be open to know more. Seeing how the boys were open to people and eager to know more even beyond that, trying to travel to other towns who are keen in engineering and automail, made people in the town adore Franky and his boys more. That made them ready to teach the town of a thing that Iceberg, the most peaceful out of them all, was afraid of the most what was how to fight. Boys knew how to shoot from their father, how to fight from their mother, through years they learned how to polish those two things and Franky gladly helped them in it, since childhood being interested in both. Iceberg still believed that no one would be that stupid to attack them.

Well guess or not, I said that before:

Spandam saw how people out there were too curious about what happened to Ocean Army and how they grew in strength so he sold the whole town to not only get some money but to build up his name in government to maybe get a better, warmer sit. It didn't ended well to both sides but, but for town it gave it independance, or more like being outlaw and a wild town. Many of people had been hurt harshly, like Kidd and Nami loosing an arm or Killer ability to speak, if not as well killed, like Bellmere who stood by town's side, despite that she was a member of the army.

After that incident Iceberg gave Franky him his moment of glory while Franky took care that next time they will be much better prepared for next situation like that as well as that they started to deal and help organisations who are against government or want to help people in need. Iceberg took care over human needs like water, food and resources while Franky took care over factor and safety of people.

Whole town was like a giant ranger army for special protection. Franky grew in hatered towards government and army to the point that he would personally kick anyone from it out of the town if not stick a gun into their ass.

Due to that no one dares to visit this place without any proof that they were invited or such when they were an outsider.
