Aftermath of an open-pit coal mine, near Centralia, Washington, 1974.
A large thermal power plant was constructed next to the mine. It continued operating until recently using imported coal, though the mine itself ceased operations in the 1990s. It was one of the largest point sources of air pollution in Washington.

Open Pit changed my life tbh. I wasn’t listening to a lot of electronic music before Firefest but that festival directly and indirectly influenced probably like 80% of my current favorite music, both through the performances and the people I’ve met there
I also have never really had the chance to go to concerts or festivals or anything, Ive never had many fun social experiences in general. so getting to experience something like that like this for free has been one of the greatest times of my life and something to look forward to when i needed it most
But most of all I remember immediately after Firefest ended I suddenly felt that I NEEDED to learn how to make music. it was the first time I’ve really felt that and I’ve felt it at every show since then. ever since I was a kid I only dreamed of being a game dev, but now I feel like this is my calling too just as much, if not more. I’ve hardly even started learning, but music would not be as huge of a dream for me as it is now if it weren’t for them and im so grateful for that. and with the thought that I could make that a reality someday I am more excited at the thought of my own future than I have ever been.
Earlier mining at Butte had been subsurface, but discovery of high quality ore accessible from an open pit by a University of California professor, hence Berkeley Pit, led to open pit mining beginning in 1955. The open pit mine closed in 1982 and slowly filled with a toxic soup which, among other things, flows into the Clark Fork of the Columbia River. It has been said that migrating birds landing on the slop die shortly afterwards. A mitigation facility is under construction but will not be fully active for several more years.
