You do not need to be “called” to an open practice.

If you want to practice it, and you want to for the right reasons, I don’t see why you have to wait until you’re “called”.

The Death Work community in particular is rather cliquey. Not everyone is going to be a full blown medium, but it doesn’t make them any less of a death worker. You don’t have to have a near death experience or lots of death in your life to be “called” to this path. You don’t need a thousand signs before trying out a new type of magic.

Our ancestors didn’t do that, so why are you?

This is coming from an initiated individual who was pulled to this path (aka “called”). If you are getting signs and a calling that rocks! But don’t let the lack of them stop you.

Possible Kraken open practice days '23-24

Note: these are only my guesses - don't make travel plans around it or anything until you see the dates announced on the KCI page. They update at the start of each month. Even then, they are subject to change depending on the needs of the team.

When the Kraken have an evening* home game, they usually have morning skate that day at Kraken Community Iceplex (KCI) from 10:30-12ish. This is free and fun to watch - but often brief (get there early!) and doesn't necessarily include everyone, or not for long. Sometimes they will have a full practice that is also open and free. It's a great way to affordably see them play up close; but of course always remember that they are at work and this is not a meet and greet opportunity. The only people who try to get their attention are little kids -- who are typically ignored. Past patterns have been:

If the Kraken have a game the night before, win or lose they don't have a skate of any kind the next day

They'll only have a full practice if there are two days between games in the same location

e.g.: if they play at home on a Wednesday night followed by a Saturday night, their open viewing would be:

Wednesday morning skate

Friday morning practice

Saturday morning skate

Based on these patterns I predict that their open full practices this coming season will be:

Jan 20 or 23 (I think 23 more likely)

Mar 10 or 11 (I think 11 more likely)

*If their game is a matinee, they will not have morning skate (I think this is the case for all teams). Their only matinee home games are: Jan. 1 Winter Classic; Feb. 19 vs Red Wings; Mar. 2 vs Oilers.

Some traditions are completely off-limits to outsiders, like Yezidi, Druze, or Sun Dance. Some traditions seek converts like Christianity, Islam, or Buddhism. But the majority of traditions are somewhere else on that spectrum.

Speaking of traditions being purely “open” or “closed” is incredibly reductive. A great many traditions don’t actively seek members but may occasionally bring newcomers into the fold who prove themselves to be respectful and dedicated. Some traditions, despite their relative obscurity are enthusiastic to receive interested parties. Others will test potential recruits, some of whom will pass, some of whom will not. Still others are loose affinity groups with little in the way of formal membership, where people come and go. And overall, within any given tradition, different lineages or sects may not only take different approaches, but distinguish themselves from one another on this point.

Tumblr, I’m begging you, stop treating this like a black or white issue. It would be so much more productive to talk about attitudes of entitlement or humility and the present day effects of historical injustices than simply slapping a “no entry” sign on traditions you may not even belong to.
