BACKGROUND

Cold hands, warm heart. That is what your sister has always told you. You were born to wealthy purebloods; the Dragomirs had always been the frigid type, both far too prideful for their own good. Appearance, you were taught, meant everything. And so you fit in with their ideas of what a perfect pureblood family should be. You were a quiet thing meant to be seen and not heard, a son to carry on the Dragomir name. Things changed when your sister came along, bringing chaos with her first breaths. But still you held on to what you were taught even with Ana’s influence. Growing up, you found more comfort in the written word. Books allowed you to experience the world safely, without risking the comforts of your perfect world. You always had trouble expressing yourself with your voice, and so you turned to writing instead with the thought that you would finally be able to share what you felt inside. But even things, sharing your words felt like you were wearing your heart on a sleeve, a blasphemous way to live if you listened to your parents. Even though your sister always tried to drag you along with her latest adventure, you felt you were far more suited to a life in the shadows in an attempt to avoid the responsibility that your parents wanted you to take. You couldn’t tell them no, of course, but you could tell them you weren’t ready to be the heir they needed to buy yourself more time to escape to the quiet life filled with fictional characters that you want to live.

There are many things you could say about your sister: they’re reckless, loving, and far too clever. You have never loved anyone as much as them, knowing that they are the reason you’ve been protected so much from you parents. They act out, sometimes, on purpose in order to draw their attention and ire away from you. You are more thankful for that than you could ever say. The move to London was their idea, you following along after your younger sister like always. But you knew this was finally your chance to break free, even if your sister might have to push you into it.

You were never the closest with Aleksandar, though your sister knew them much better. But you had an admiration for them, following so closely in their father’s footsteps when you struggled with it for so long. The two of you grew closer after leaving school, empathizing with each other’s struggles. You’ve even toyed with the idea of basing some future storyline off of them. But you would never do that without their permission, not when friendships are so few and far between.

Brionna Zabini » former summer fling.

They were your first love, something you never really forget. You would be loathe to admit it, but your first short story was based on your romance with them, including the heartbreak you felt when Brionna cruelly left you behind. You never really forgave them for this, though you did let go of that love in the years since then. You have often wondered how they turned out, if they became as cunning and lovely as their mother was rumored to be, but never tried to find out. Some small part of you is hoping to run into them now that you’ve moved to London with your sister, if just to get their opinion on the story you’ve written based on that summer.

Teddy Lupin » new friendship.

You met Teddy late one night in a bar. You had just been trying something new, trying to get the lay of the land while settling into the city. It was easy to find yourself drawn to them like a moth to a flame. They were bright and cheerful, just like the protagonist in one of your favorite novels. You’ve met a few times since then, both enjoying the time spent together. You never realized how much life you were missing out on until you met them.

BACKGROUND

Cameras flashed around you from the moment you were born, stories were written before you could even say a word. People just clamored to know the firstborn of the famous Viktor Krum — Bulgaria’s quidditch darling, and Triwizard Tournament participant — what would you achieve in your lifetime? The question was asked at every interview and at every dinner that you attended with your parents. The smile that came to your face was well-practiced, and your voice was smooth when you said that you were still figuring things out. It was obvious that you had the same quidditch prowess as your father, and many teams had come to scout you, but you never felt quite right in the sky. Still, you could never turn your back on it. You resembled your father in all ways — in appearance, in mannerisms, but never in wants and desires. But no matter how much time passed, you could never break free of the model the world had molded you into. The strong stance, chin raised and shoulders back. Words lingered on your tongue, there was so much to say, but still you stayed stoic. Some called you cold, some called you a duplicate. You called yourself trapped.

You know both of the Dragomirs because of school, and you never had a problem with either. They were nice to you — that’s what mattered. While in school, you would say you got along with Ana better. They didn’t walk around you on eggshells, and you appreciated that. You liked their liveliness. Now that you are out of school, you’ve been spending more time with Anton. It is no slight against Ana, but you just wind up with Anton more often. They’re different than their sibling, but you can appreciate their ability to listen. They’re easy to talk to.

James Potter » quidditch friend.

For what it was worth, as much as you would like to talk about something that isn’t quidditch for once in your life, James’ passion and enthusiasm for the sport is intoxicating. When they talk about flying or getting the quaffle through one of the hoops, you find yourself looking at the sport through a new lens. You don’t have the heart to tell them you’re disillusioned with the sport. If anything could break their heart, it might just be that.

Joely Delacour » flatmate.

You had known her for years when out of the blue she asked you to share a flat with her. You had no reason to say no — you knew no one else in London at the time – so the next thing you knew you were sharing a flat with Joely Delacour. You remember the little girl she used to be, wild and eccentric, and you are glad she has grown up a bit. Still, she’s easy to live with, and makes sure you get out of the house instead of just sulking.

Teddy Lupin » friendly.

You wouldn’t have expected the auror to be so friendly — you were expecting someone stiff, and serious — but then the first thing Teddy did when you met them was down a drink and then change his hair to a bright maroon as a part of a dare. He is the epitome of ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’. You appreciate how he always has a joke ready to tell, and you appreciate how in the blink of an eye he can go from laughing to giving sage advice.
