🚀🔮 The Future of Research: Why the Unanswered Questions Matter Research doesn’t work by looking back, patting ourselves on the back, and telling each other how great science used to be. Of course, the past decades have been successful—particle physics, in particular, has achieved something truly unique over the last 50 years with the Standard Model of the microcosm. But the past is behind us. If we want real progress, we must not engage in backward-looking discussions; instead, we must look ahead—and the future of research lies solely in the unanswered questions. It is precisely this radical shift in thinking that is the focus of our Zoomposium episode. We spoke with Prof. Dr. Thomas Naumann (particle physicist at CERN and DESY) and Dr. Ilja Bohnet (physicist and research officer at the Helmholtz Association) about their new book, “THE MYSTERIOUS UNIVERSE.” What makes their approach unique is that they don’t celebrate the status quo; instead, they deliberately start with the fundamental, unsolved mysteries of modern science. How much stress are you conditioned to handle before you get a mental or physical reaction? What person A finds overwhelming might be a normal work load for person B. To figure out what’s a normal work load for person A, we need to ask him / her an open question: “How many hours of work would you consider a normal work load for you?” If you don’t ask this question you run the risk of comparing them with your standard.
