bones freaking out because he thinks he accidentally destroyed his friend's retinas with a rushed procedure, spock just saunters in actually fine and starts his witty insult barrage without missing a beat. doctor mccoy does not get paid enough for this.

The Spirk in Operation: Annihilate! is top notch all the way through, but probably my favorite moments were McCoy’s “Your affection for Spock.” and Kirk’s barely contained rage and fear he has to keep from spilling out on Spock and McCoy, not to mention his own guilt. I also love how it reinforces that no matter what Kirk experiences (the death of his brother and sister-in-law, the blinding of his beloved, etc.) he’s not allowed to grieve or rest. He has so many people counting on him at all times, and not just those on the ship. Top notch stuff, man.

Edited to add - I just got to the end. Why is Spock always so sassy??? I love him so much. And Amok Time is next???? These writers were on a tear!

I also just noticed- is this the episode where they drop “Vulcanian” entirely and just stick with Vulcan? I realized I haven’t heard Vulcanian much since previous episodes and I know someone on here knows exactly when the switch stuck.

Some thoughts while watching Operation: Annihilate! ...

After Jim finds out Sam has died, Spock is like "Captain, I understand how you-" and then Kirk cuts him off. I have no clue what the TOS writers were imagining he was gonna say, but retroactively, maybe this was Spock's first and only attempt at volunteering information about his family lol

Kirk should have just ripped Spock's shirt off when the creature landed on his back. Like that would have been faster and we would have gotten to see Spock shirtless

I'm into the blue medical jumpsuits.

I'm jealous of whoever got to dress Spock in that black turtle neck after surgery

Having Spock says "let me help" to Kirk ONE EPISODE after Kirk compares the phrase to "I love you" is insane

It's interesting how Kirk's reaction when the people he loves are hurting it to kind of narrow-mindedly focus on them (McCoy has to remind him there's a million other people suffering from the same thing as his nephew and Spock) but also to distance himself. . . like he can't bear to watch them in pain. I know that Spock is generally stereotyped as being emotionally avoidant, but KIRK ALSO IS

I'm obsessed with Star Trek continually using "affection" to describe Kirk's feelings for Spock (I believe is done again in the TMP novelization [if not, it's in a different novel], which distinguishes between friendship and affection, implying that the affection isn't just friendship). Also, in the German version, I believe they just say "love"
