I wasn't around back then, so I don't know how common the psychological understanding of this profound quote was at the time, but it strikes me as one of the most important messages we could possibly get out today. - Anyone who has ever truly conquered the forces of evil inside themselves will tell you that they did it through loving the unlovable. That it has a miraculous transformative effect on the worst parts of our minds. - They'll also tell you that shame, repression and judgements drive these demons deeper, they make them more powerful and eventually they consume everything. - The more I talk to people about the shadow, the more I realize how common it is to experience 'evil' thoughts and how many people are troubled by them. How many people believe they mean something about them. - Of course we'd want to contain these things, of course we'd want to do whatever we could to stop them from spreading. It's a noble thing to do, the idea of loving that which we find detestable seems not only scary but immoral. - But it's what is required to transform these forces on a fundamental level. It's what's required if we ever want to live in a world free of hatred and violence. - It's also what's required if we want to live a life of personal satisfaction, if we want to be able to truly love those around us and if we ever want a shot at inner peace. - The fact that we have them is a simply a sign of our capacity, we are truly free to become anything we want. We can be heroes or we can be villains. I had one of those important dreams last night and I woke up super introspective, thinking about the transition this last year was. - I moved to Los Angeles after the most impactful break-up of my life, and in many ways, that transition largely defined my life. - I'd never had to leave someone I was still in love with before, and I'm still not entirely sure how to process that experience. But I do know that I've grown more in this last year than just about any that preceded it. - I see where I sold myself out, I see the long term impacts of compromises I didn't realize I was making, I see where I withheld love, I see where I was scared to commit and all this has made me such a better person I am so much more proud of being. - This last year was crazy, I've regained my sense of self and it's stronger than ever. I've learned to be alone while also learning how to love in ways I was always afraid to. I'm more clear about my purpose than ever before and I feel genuinely equipped to dedicate my life to my mission and my values. - Might be a bit before I feel comfortable dating again but I love this life, I love who I am becoming and I love what I am doing with my life. My family, my friends, my mentors and students, my home, my new city and all of it. - It's bittersweet that something so beautiful could he born from losing something that I love but here we are. WHOOPS! - They say the road to hell is paved with good intentions. I think a more accurate way of saying it would be the road to hell is made by people who didn't listen to their shadow. - It's a sad irony when some of the kindest people you'll ever meet will suffer from depression, anxiety and repressed anger issues... All because they didn't want to be bad people. - Often times it can even turn you into the very thing you're wanting to avoid, that's what happened with me. - I was a HUGE asshole when I was younger, then I overcompensated by repressing all my anger and selfishness. Guess what happened? I became consumed with anger and selfishness and almost took my life as a result. - Imagine my surprise. - Now I've learned there just isn't anything virtuous in avoiding anger, selfishness or anything deemed 'negative'. - Real virtue is integrating these things into a coherent and honest values system so that you can use them in the ways you deem worthy. - I'm going to be addressing this in my group course coming up at the end of January.
