grimacing as he shuffled through the paperwork, matthew thumbed through the case files and sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. ❛ i ... alright. so i have a couple of questions, mr. barnes. ❜ he cleared his throat, straightening his posture as they sat together in his office. first things first, was matthew really the one that should be representing him? ❛ you were given a conditional government pardon. did you break those conditions? ❜ he had a feeling he could predict the answer, but it was his job to ask even seemingly obvious questions.

❛ don't get me wrong — i don't mind representing you. criminal defense is what i do best, just ... help me get my facts straight, preferably before i'm trying to get you off the hook in a court of law. i understand you want this to work for you, but you'll need to work with me first. ❜

❝ yeah, okay ... ❞ if you want to get technical about it, she supposes he's right. picking locks and disarming cameras doesn't necessarily count as breaking anything. not that yelena's opposed to breaking and entering. that's a petty crime in the grand scheme of things ... what she is opposed to is the lab they're currently standing in and the underground scientists, the experiments that tend to go along with it.

human experimentation is a bit of a touchy subject. go figure.

bathed in the cool blue hour hue, veiled by the smell of fresh coffee … with her knees tucked to her chest and her hands around a warm latte, trixie’s eyelids twitch nearly imperceptively. a crack in the straight face. something of pity, maybe even regret, but the way she says it is more … matter of fact. she’s straight shooting the truth, or sharing her pessimism.

there’s a city below, one that doesn’t care about redemption. that’s its whole thing, isn’t it? whatever happens in vegas, stays in vegas. it doesn’t matter. nothing does. there’s a reason you can smoke in the casinos. there’s a reason there’s indoor cities that mimic an uncanny tuscany. it’s always sideways. just like they are. bridal parties are still crawling the strip, the bachelorette is probably doing a walk of shame, the girls in amazon-shipped corsets are going home with their mascara smudging … redemption doesn’t matter in a city that barely exists. she briefly nods.

“ people like us? we don’t get redemption. ”   trixie’s voice is rough from barely sleeping, but it’s her. she’s sharing, no, uncovering something from deep inside … something she’s convinced herself of, or something she’s learned the hard way. but her face barely changes. her eyes just hang low, false eyelashes struggle to stay up. she’s made her morning latte with an extra two shots of espresso. she’s still wearing her dressing robe, and there’s last night’s garters peeking from under … despite the new blood on her hands, she’s the same as the day before, and the day before that, and the day before that.    “ but at least we can die with experience. ”

MANY HAVE BEEN POINTED IN THE FACE OF TRIXIE … IT’S PART OF HER MYTHOS, IT’S IN THE RUMORS AND OCCASIONAL INTERVIEW.   it’s there, behind a veil of fluffy plumage, appearing as the feathers part and the lights shift. it’s there, too, when she throws her head back after sniffing a line                   pressed to her forehead, with her hands up in surrender, not even pleading for her life as she’s trapped in a velvet booth. unfortunate, really, undeserved, totally. it’s there in the back of her mind, and on her worst days, she feels a barrel pressed between her eyes … “ i have. ”   spoken in a short response, as to not disturb the heavy air falling upon her shoulders   …   she assesses the danger, and she doesn’t totally understand why she doesn’t feel like a target. is it naivety? will she convince herself that’s tough enough, stoic enough, to shrug it off? feel the seats envelope you, feel the cold glass in your hands, listen to the heavy bass of a bumping nightclub, just beyond the private lounge, just a little bit away … she knows. that’s the hardest part. she’ll take a well paying job and avoid the shady underbelly of whatever club she’s at. it’s vegas. it’s glitz and glam and dazzling lights, it’s headrushes and vomit and concussions. it often entails working under a cocaine trafficker, or else she’ll end up in amazon shipped showgirl costumes, begging tourists for $10 photos on the strip. she’d rather die than be stuck in purgatory. so.   “ i don’t know what you’re looking for. i don’t know what you want. i can’t help you. ”

“ NO, NO! THAT’S NOT TRUE! ”   but she knows. she feels it in her heart, she knows that it’s very possibly   …   over. poised posture and winking at the enemy can only get a gal so far, and it got ursula very far, but this journey comes to an end. even if she doesn’t let it end, it’ll happen. maybe not in the way she expects, but … “ MAYBE IF WE EXPLAIN OURSELVES … ??? ”   and she says this with faltering confidence. oh, poor, poor, thing                   how awful it must feel, to be so naive. it’s not a bad thing, to love the world and respect the powers that be, but there’s something about expecting every soul to be born with a good spark in it … it’s just not that easy, now, is it? ursula learns this, over and over again, but never accepts it. it’s easy to kick kaijus into the stratosphere, but it’s a different beast : looking down the barrel of a gun, held by someone’s son, father, brother   …   and even if they could explain themselves away, it’s not a good look to be involved with the winter soldier.

AND URSULA DOESN’T FAULT HIM, NOT A SINGLE BIT. SHE’D DO IT ALL AGAIN IF SHE COULD : HELP. EVEN WITH HIS REPUTATION, EVEN THOUGH THIS MIGHT END IN A HAIL OF BULLETS, AS IF HER FANTASIES OF FLYING AWAY WITH A TRAIL OF GLITTER WILL COME TRUE.

she wonders how he does this, how his voice doesn’t shake, how he speaks without the cadence of a wanted man. ursula knows he must be used to it                   it’s foolish to ignore the mythos                   but she still can’t wrap her brain around feeling so calm? is that the word? the glamour is over, and the worst is yet to come … “ i won’t leave you behind. we can get out of this. ”

Oh, Jack. We both know you don't like it gentle. You have such a strong grasp on Bucky as a character that it's hard to believe you're not one of the comic writers for him tbh. I can always hear his voice when I read the dialogue you write for him. His actions, the way you write him. Ahhhhhh. Chewing on the bars of my enclosure, actually. You've so many headcanons for him that are so fitting?? I forget they're not canon. Your Bucky has me in a chokehold tbh. I also love all the verse/world building stuff we do for our boys-- down to ridiculous npcs that make reappearances. I'm glad I could be a terrible influence and encourage the return of your Bucky blog. :) This ask isn't from your mumu but shoutout to it anyway cause I fucking love your Violet. + you're extremely creative. coming up with an entire ass cult of ocs and a town is impressive, the spreadsheets are awesome.
