The regrets of the dead belong with the dead alone! "Grudge" is an illusion that the living create and feed on their own!
Prince Fukaboshi of Fishermen’s Island, One Piece
Since I’m late on my schedule, my contribution to DAY 1 ("rebel" prompt) of the One Piece Admirals Week event (@ PieceWeek on Twitter) is just a quick manga panel redraw (I was drawing a different character at first, but then realised he's not an admiral... I’ll finish that other fanart too, eventually ^^’ ).
So I suppose you feel guilty for looking at one of my characters in an erotic way (Haha)? I don’t mind at all and this goes for all of my characters. My mentor taught me that ‘The World of Manga’ is a product you create, and after people spend money on that product, it isn’t professional for us to complain about it. I agree with him. Please enjoy my work however you like, with whatever interpretations or fantasies you want. I’m just happy that you read my manga.
Eiichiro Oda
Just a reminder to whoever in the fandom still keeps judging, badmouthing, or worse harassing other fans for their own shipping preferences or personal interpretations of the characters and/or the story. Oda made an erotic example since the question was about it if you check the source, but what he said implies he expects and even encourages full freedom in how OP fans write/draw/interpret the manga characters (so surprising coming from the author of a manga about freedom! :P ) So, if you happen to see or read something you don’t like just ignore it. Or, if you really want to debate about it, at least accept that the people you’re talking with are free to have their own opinions and interpretations and you can’t insult or try to “cancel” them for their preferences in how they engage with fictional media. Even just trying to “correct” them may be offensive depending on how you do it. Surely, it sounds pretentious. My personal stance in all of this is that we don’t need to “respect” fictional characters, or to “protect” them. Sure people, someone may identify with them or find representation in them, but that’s their own way to enjoy the media and it isn’t universal. If someone is interpreting a character in a way you don’t like, even if that way is non-canon, they are free to do so and nobody should take that as a personal insult. Have fun with fictional characters, “use” them however you want, call them with whatever pronouns you want, but always, always respect real people for the simply fact they’re living beings and not fictional ones like the characters we’re all so passionate about.
“Do it with a Don!”
“Zolo” nonsense aside, why do the official One Piece English scans use “doom” instead of “don”? “Don” is there for a specific reason, it shouldn’t be changed like that--there are also characters’ signature phrases based on it! “Don” is the Japanese onomatopoeia for a drum beat; it would be “dong” in Italian, but it’s kept like in the original over here. Definitely, it isn’t a word that should be translated with a stupid “doom”. I try reading official scans--I really try--but I don’t like their adaptations and that ruins the experience for me (which is a shame since the translation itself is quite good). Luckily, “Rufy” aside, the Italian official adaptations are much better overall... It’s annoying though that outside of fan-scanlations I can’t read a version of the manga with both Luffy and Zoro’s names transliterated properly. Editors should put more care in official releases.
I’m grateful that my characters are so popular among females [readers], but at the end of the day, I just want to draw things that young male readers will find cool and interesting.

Clear and simple, isn’t it? And yet, I often read complains here in the western side of the fandom that... *rolls eyes*
But...no matter who gets injured by the ship's you build...even if it looks like they'll destroy the world...you're the one who gave them life!! The one who created them must not deny them!!! Don't blame the ships!!!
- Tom (Oda, One Piece, GN 37, 203-4)
No!! I...I'm so torn up inside! Even now... Pops...Luffy...all my shipmates... They're all bleeding and dying for me!! It touches me so deeply...the tears won't stop following!! Even after everything I've seen and done I still don't want to die!!
