A Ghost of the Past
Jotakak Short/Oneshot
“Hey.” Noriaki whispered as he shook his partner’s shoulder, “Jotaro, c’mon, breakfast is ready.” As he spoke, slowly, the other’s eyes opened, and soon a yawn escaped his lips, then a,
“What time is it?”
“6:43, if you don’t get up soon you’ll have to eat at work.” Slowly he sat up, and received a small peck on his cheek, “I remind you again then, but after you shower tonight, shave.” Noriaki joked with a small, but warm laugh,
“Is Jolyne up already?”
“Jolyne is at her mom’s this week, so I’m not sure, but I’d hope so.”
“Right.” Jotaro felt, confused, something was off, but he wasn’t sure what. Suddenly he was in the kitchen, but he didn’t remember walking down the stairs and into the kitchen.
He brushed off his confusion and forgetting, as his tired mind, just messing with him, and began to eat the breakfast Noriaki had made for him.
“So my plan for today, is; when I get home, spend a couple hours on that big oil painting I got commissioned a few days ago, then do a couple of the digital ones, and when you get home, we can go out for a special dinner before Jolyne gets back? Maybe that Italian place you liked?”
“Sounds good.” He offered a tired smile as he spoke, though he still couldn’t shake the feeling that something, was wrong about this morning.
Almost in a blink of his eye, he was on the road towards work, with not a hair out of place, this time he remembered what all he’d done, finished eating, brushed his teeth, washed his face, got dressed, checked his bag, and left, but couldn’t actually remember doing any of it.
What was also strange was he didn’t remember saying goodbye to Noriaki before he left, not even just saying goodbye, he couldn’t remember seeing Noriaki at any point between talking about eating out, and now.
He thought perhaps there was a stand involved, but, one that caused brain fog from here, all the way back home, would have to be an automatic stand, or a vigilant user. Both have been rare, one always had, and the other stopped being the norm when users stopped being hand picked by ‘Lord Stick Up His Ass’.
He dismissed the stand idea, and just assumed he was just foggy from being sleep deprived. His drive was relatively short, a universal constant since they’d bought a house near the research facility.
He could still remember when they’d toured the house, he hadn’t divorced his wife yet so it was the two of them, but after they’d signed the paperwork, he’d picked up Noriaki and, wait could he remember? The thoughts were still fresh in his mind, and yet they weren’t there at all.
He’d rubbed at his temples as he tried to recall what they’d done on the little private tour, but nothing was coming to mind.
Once again he brushed it off, this time blaming his new medication, he was pretty sure he recalled his doctor saying it could cause lapses in his memory. He then exited his car, making sure to remember everything he needed, he didn’t want to have to take too many trips thanks to his brain fog, and made his way into the facility and towards his office. Starting the day off with some paperwork he’d neglected the night before.
The rest of his work day went according to schedule, and soon he was on his way out, glancing silently to his phone as he got in the car. From what he could tell, the brain fog had disappeared with his morning grogginess.
He had just a few new messages, one from his ex-wife,
‘Dolly: How does 8 sound for picking up Jolyne tomorrow?’ Received two hours earlier, that wouldn’t be fun to deal with, but she knew he was at work, so he typed a quick ‘sounds good’ before continuing down his notifications.
Two messages from Noriaki,
‘Nori: My class got cut short by an “unplanned fire drill” so I’m headed home now.
‘Nori: I’ll make food, instead of us eating out, since I have time.’ He smiled as he read the messages, before embarking on the drive home.
Another short drive and he was sitting in his car in the driveway of his home, staring at Noriaki’s little green beetle in the garage felt so,
Wrong
Something was definitely wrong with this picture, but he wasn’t sure what. And again, he brushed it off, again blaming the medication, he could just sort of remember hearing his doctor saying it could cause confusion.
He parked and made his way through the front entrance, to find Noriaki at the stove.
“I’m home.”
“Dolly wanted me to get Jolyne at eight tomorrow.”
“AM or PM?”
“I usually get her in the evening, so PM.”
“Right, sounds good.”
“Hi daddy!” Jolyne yelled as she hugged her dad’s legs.
“Hey Squirt,” he squatted to pick her up, “How was your week with momma?”
“It was good, we played fairies a whole bunch!”
“I can tell, you’ve got pixie dust in your hair.” She giggled and tried to shake some of the glitter out of her hair. “Are you all packed?”
“Mmhmm, momma is even letting bring my wings this time, they’re in my backpack!”
“Well go make sure you’ve got everything, I gotta talk to momma for a minute.”
“Okay!” She ran off to her room, and once she out of earshot, Dolly addressed him,
“What did you need to talk to me about?” She was looking around her cabinets for something as she spoke,
“I have some extended family things I have to do, I’ll be heading back to Japan for a month. I wanted to give you the choice, do you want her for the whole time I’m gone, or do you want her to come with me?”
“Well if it’s family stuff, I’d want her to go, but judging by how you said things, it’s more business then family, right?”
“It’s going to be will talk with my uncle, since Gramps is too old to go himself. I might visit my parents as well, but it’s not really for them.”
“Right, I think she’d prefer staying here, if it’ll just be will stuff.”
“Okay, then I’ll bring her back on Friday, and I’m leaving Monday.” Dolly gave him a nod as Jolyne came running back with her orca whale plush,
“I didn’t want to leave Mr. Whalington alone all week.”
“I knew you’d forgotten something, your bag seemed too empty.” He took her bags and plush before continuing, “Say buh-bye to momma.”
“Bye-Bye momma!” She waved before following her dad to the car. “Daddy who’s that?” She asked as she pointed to Noriaki in the passenger seat.
“That’s Noriaki, you know him.”
“That’s Noriaki? I thought Grandpa JiJi said he died when you were littler?”
“He, did, die, didn’t he?” As Jotaro questioned the past two days, the slim man he remembered melted away, starting with a hole in his stomach, he looked like he’d been shot, as a spirt of blood reopened the old wound, before he turned into a dripping mound of blood and vitriol, before disappearing completely. With him went the constant feeling of ‘something is off’ he’d felt since he’d woke up the day before.
“Woah, Daddy, where did the ghost go?”
“I’m not sure.” He lead her to the car and strapped her into her car seat, before getting into the driver’s side door. In a meager attempt to bring back the good feeling he had with Noriaki back, he briefly glanced to the passenger seat.
Something he didn’t expect was there for him to see, little box wrapped with green paper and topped with a pink bow. Noriaki’s color of pink.
Determined not to show weakness in front of Jolyne, he drove with his quivering lip between his teeth. Once they were home, he got her settled in her room, then he hid away in his own, with the box.
Slowly he untied the bow, and almost silently tore away the paper, to find a folded piece of paper, and cherry shaped studs.
He sat the studs aside to unfold the paper, it was a pastel green stationary with little cherries and lime green gems along the sides, and a short note written in a sharp black script he knew well.
‘I wanted to see you again. I guess I should’ve came earlier in the week, but I wanted to be sure I’d see her. She’ll grow into a strong woman, I swear, I’ve seen it. I missed spending time with you. I’ll see you again another time. Sincerely and forever yours, Kakyoin Noriaki.
PS, I hope you like the earrings.’
Jotaro smiled a small, weak smile, as tears flowed freely down his face. A nearly inaudible whisper escaped his mouth, even he could barely hear it. But it found its way to the person it was meant for,
“I missed you too.”
