Orange tarts are delightful pastries featuring a crisp, buttery tart shell filled with a luscious orange-flavored custard, curd, or cream. These tarts offer a perfect balance of sweetness and citrusy tang, making them a refreshing and elegant dessert option.
(okay, but seriously, here’s this. Warning: this got so hella long.)
BACKSTORY:
Carver was turned during the early years of the great depression. He was orphaned very young, just a few weeks old when his parents died and he went to live in some run-down orphanage. Then again, it was the early 1900s, so orphanages were pretty much Bad across the board. Anyway, he lived there until he was fifteen, and as a child he did what children do. He learned, he grew, and he manipulated and abused children younger than him, emotionally and psychologically twisting their arms to get them to do what he wanted, even if those things were illegal. “Hey, that candy isn’t going to steal itself! And we’re friends, right? If you dont do something for me when I need you, that means youre not a good friend. I’m going to tell everyone that you’re a mean friend, Ruthie, and no one will ever want to play with you and you’ll turn into a hag now go in there and get me that candy!” ahhhhh, childhood.
He finally got kicked out of the orphanage when he was 15, around 1927. He roamed the streets, stealing cigarettes and getting into gang fights, playing cards and being generally dirty. His big break finally came when he was about 23, and someone stopped him in an alley at night. It was, of course, a vampire who attacked and fed from him. They planned to leave him for dead, but no one kills Carver Alexander Sebastian without his express permission: he crawled, nearly lifeless, towards the fleeing stranger and called out that he wanted to be like him. It was the first time in his life that he ever truly begged. He wanted to be powerful, he wanted to live forever, he wanted to have people fear him.
He got his wish, of course.
PRESENT DAY:
Old jolly Carver never grew out of that manipulation. He got a great gig doing what he discovered he absolutely enjoyed almost rapturously: torturing people. You see, when you have a mafia full of vampire gangsters who need information, sometimes you need a little help getting someone to talk. Enter Mr. Sebastian.
He learned he had an amazing new power as a pyrokinetic vampire, shooting fire from his mouth and hands at any given opportunity. He hunts his victims and traps them, usually in a cellar or abandoned building, and tortures them physically and mentally until he claims that he’s going to let them go. At which time he’ll let them run a little while, even step aside to let them pass, but they wont get to the door before he lunges. The last thing they hear is that he’s changed his mind.
The only bad thing that came out of his job? Charles.
CHARLES: (yes, he gets a section)
Now, Charles himself is basically the embodiment of a good thing. He is sweet and clumsy and stuttery and awkward and My Fucking Son. I love him. The problem is: Carver loves him too. Originally, Charles was nothing but a toy to Carver. He pretended for a while to love Charles dearly, kissing him, fucking him, spending time with him, when in reality he didn’t care much for his tall affectionate friend. He would give him a blow job in the bathroom stall of a convenience store, then tell him that he needs help on a job he doesn’t particularly want to do, even if that job could get my poor sweet Charles in trouble.
The more time they spent together, the more Charles expressed how much he loved Carver. And this confused the hell out of him. Why does he love me? Can’t he tell I’m using him? Man, he genuinely seems to care for me in a way that no one else in my life has ever seemed to genuinely care about me. I hate that.
to make a long story short, Carver’s pretend love turned into real love.
Now dont get me wrong: Carver is terrible to Charles. He hits him, talks down to him, purposely ignores him, and doesn’t respect the things Charles likes. But love is a very odd concept to Carver, who has not once felt any sort of love in his long eternal life. Sometimes when they’re together, asleep in bed, Carver will demand that Charles embraces him, a demand which he meets readily. And it sickens and disturbs Carver how comfortable and safe he feels in the arms of this big tall idiot who gives him tiny kisses as they fall asleep.
Basically, Carver is angry and confused about how he does feel a horrible, strange, twisted sense of love for Charles. And that’s why he’s the worst thing to ever happen to him.
They wind up living together.
