YA Earth is like.. aliens monitor earth but havent initiated contact yet, but a lot of earth culture like 80s pop hits became super popular in space despite humans as a whole being considered kind of a joke

it gets even wilder tho; gen 2 was developed with the mindset that it would be the last games in the franchise so they simultaneously put a shitton of effort into it while also not giving a fuck from a PR standpoint
like, right when they announced the game, they had a playable demo at an event (with three completely different starter pokemon that never appeared again, mind you) and claimed that it would be out by the end of 1997, followed by 18 months of complete radio silence before re-confirming it as a game boy color title releasing in 1999
you’d never see this sort of shit happening with modern-day TPCi, which loves to maintain complete control over exactly what information gets out when and generally doesn’t like to talk about projects until they’re less than a year from release
