🐋Happy World Orca Day🐋
A coincidence in making this Tumblr yesterday, but happy world orca day everyone! Let's spread awareness and grant them the personhood status they deserve!
Wildlife Highlight: Killer Whales
I was originally going to hold off on this animal, but since it is Orca Day, I had to make an acception.
Orcas, also known as Killer Whales, are incredible animals. A killer whale is black with blotches of white around its eyes, belly, and body. Similar to their appearance is the false killer whale. The have been known to swim in cooler waters, especially in areas such as Washington, Iceland, the ross sea and Scandinavian waters. They have also been known to swim many miles in just one day.
These animals are considered to be highly intelligent and social. Family bonds and other social interactions are important in the life of a killer whale. The younger whales will stay by their sides for many years. The pod of whales also contribute to successful hunting tactics, working together to take down prey.
These ideas of social interaction and intelligence are what I believe fuel the debate of whether whales should be kept in captivity. The cramped pools and "family" of whales can cause physical as well as psychological damage. Oh, and when I say families I mean that they are a random assortment of whales thrown into the same habitat. I would like to dive deeper into this debate but that will be for another day, I just wanted to cover basic natural history. I hope you enjoyed it and Happy Orca Day!
PS stay green!
