NUCKLELAVEE (The Devil of the Sea) The Orkney islands (orkneyjar in norwegian) are a region above Northern Scotland. The islands have been habited around 8500 years. The people living in the islands are called orcadians, and nucklelavee is a demon in orcadian mythology usually called one of their most horrific demons. First recorded stories about the orcadian demons were recorded in 16th century latin manuscripts. Nucklelavee is a demon that possess both horse-like and human features, the difference to for example to centaurs is that the features are melted in together, the rider and the horse being one entity, however it only takes this form while it rides in the land. It has no skin, the veins are yellow and the blood is black. It is unknown what kind of form nucklelavee takes in the water. Islanders were terrified of the creature and feared to say its name. It was said to destroy the crops and inflict diseases over people. The only spirit that can contain nucklelavee from rising to the land during the summer months is the Mither O’ the Sea. artwork by me.
