Orch Dork Remarks
Perfect pitch is the ability to instantly hear what musical pitch is being played. Someone with perfect pitch can listen to another musician play a note and immediately identify what note they heard - aka, a D, a C#, an E, and the like.
Sans canonically teleports, allowing him to lazily, effortless, but also efficiently get what he needs done. It would only make sense that, in a musical world like this one, Sans would be the individual with perfect pitch. He wouldn’t need to try to get the note in tune. He’d just listen and be able to tell. This is Sans’ musical “shortcut.”
Papyrus: I ALWAYS PRETEND I AM IN TUNE INSTEAD OF PRACTICING WITH A TUNER. SANS NEVER PRACTICES WITH A TUNER, EITHER. HE ALWAYS JUST... UM... PLAYS IN TUNE.
Papyrus: I THINK HE HAS A SHORTCUT OR SOMETHING.

I’ll get better at digital art when I actually GET A TABLET augh.
When I was young, and before all my instrumentalist peers grew taller, I saw a plethora of tuba case pranks. Sans, who never grew very tall, would certainly take advantage of empty tuba cases.
Poor Papyrus.

Aaron and Papyrus would both play trumpet. And try to best each other at it. It couldn’t happen any other way... not with how Papyrus wants to gain popularity, and not with how Aaron likes to flex and show off his stuff.
Soooooooo... really obnoxious high note contest.
Orch Dork Remarks
The musical excerpts they’re playing are:
Jupiter: Bringer of Jollity from The Planets by Gustav Holst
Mars: Bringer of War from The Planets by Gustav Holst
Concerto for Solo Trumpet and Brass Quintet by Johann F. Fasch
William Tell Overture by Gioachino Rossini (played an octave too high)
I have heard so many high note contests, especially on trumpet (I love you trumpets). At the middle school and high school level, it’s usually just a competition to see who can play a louder, higher note. By the time of high school honor orchestras and collegiate ensembles, you get to excerpt one-offs, where each player tries to best one another in all the famous orchestra solos they have memorized. Which is sort of what is going on here (though I imagine Papyrus and Aaron both sound HORRIBLY ANNOYING right now!).
Bonus
Just Aaron being a glamorous trumpeter.
Oh my goodness I can’t believe I drew that. XD
Presenting... ORCHESTRALE. In which I get to make happy remarks about Undertale and classical music simultaneously.
I have all the other characters’ instruments of choice figured out - I’ll get to them as I can and maybe list out a full orchestra chart. But I figured this was a good introductory subset!
Orch Dork Remarks (For people who want some musical explanations/background):
Mallets refers to percussion instruments like the xylophone, vibraphone, marimba, glockenspiel, etc. The instruments are pitched percussion, meaning that you can play melodies (as versus cool whacky noises) on mallet instruments. Muffet, with six hands, would be able to hit a whole lot of notes at the same time and sound extraordinary!
The euphonium is basically a small tuba with a higher, tenor pitch.
Theremin is an electronic instrument that plays a pitch according to how you move your hand in front of it. It’s incredibly challenging to play, but has a wonderful, spooky tone to it that would enchant Napstablook.
Tchaikovksky’s 1812 Overture is famous for including cannons in the music. As in, Tchaikovsky wrote a part for real, extremely loud, exploding cannons. Of course most orchestras don’t actually perform the piece with real cannons... but try telling that to someone like dramatic-flair-inclined Mettaton.
