4/20/18.
I really had zero idea who Robert Storey was. The fact that Emotional Response was releasing a retrospective hooked me. Then I heard “Bad Day At Babbling Brook” by Orchestre Murphy. Ha! I knew I’d heard that!
This retrospective is true to the word. It spans 30 years and so many styles and sounds. What shines through is Robert (Rob) Storey’s pop genius. If you’ve enjoyed other under-known songwriting geniuses (Roberto C. Meyer, Eric Matthews, Martin Newell, Dan Treacy, Neil Hannon), then you’ve struck musical gold.
There is bliss, melancholy, and sadness. There are the sounds of The Pogues (”Noah and the Ark”) and The Expendables (”Man Who Died Laughing”). I’m just beginning to scratch the surface here.
I believe Mr. Storey would like you to come up and hear his etchings (although, if I were him I would never sit outside my flat and use my index finger to welcome people to hear my etchings...yikes).
