Schoolism - Introduction to Digital Painting by Andrew Hou
Assignment: To create a greyscale painting of your choice, and add color to the greyscale painting.
Since Lunar New Year is around the corner, I went for an Asian/Chinese/oriental feel. Also, I don’t want to draw too many cartoony/anthro-ish stuff so that I improve my subject variety.
Some feedback gathered from the Schoolism subscription group:
The first painting doesn’t have a clear, defined light source. so the tone variation across the face and upper/mid torso areas are almost monotone. So I re-defined the light source in the second painting.
Because human face and skin surfaces are quite reflective when near light sources, the reflection and highlights are strongest at the face area - usually near the forehead, nose bridge and cheeks.
Shadows on the face are usually strongest beneath the lips and surfaces below the cheeks (assuming he/she isn’t too rounded; a rounded person would have more highlights around those facial cheek areas).
I solved the coloring problem (after much hesitation) by using the initial coloring layer as an Overlay, then I used a touch-ups layer in either Soft Light or Multiply (highlights and shadows respectively).
