hot take but hetalia is actually a really fun fandom to be a part of and you should join. I’m not saying that the source material is comedic or literary genius but it is actually pretty entertaining. but more importantly. hetalia is the perfect set up for the creation of fandom content. there lots and lots of characters - most countries in Europe are canon, as well as potential future characters or oc’s for any other country, region, or city. i’ve even seen oc’s made for cultures and geographical entities. the canon characters are well developed and complex with interesting relationship dynamics. you want complicated familial interactions? got those. found family trope? got it. angst of losing or loved one? yep. the one real genre of relationships you won’t see in the hetalia source material is canon romance. that’s right - there’s no canon romance in hetalia. however. there is lots of almost canon relationships or hinted relationship. because there is so much canon source material and literally all of history to work with you can create a story for almost any ship.. pretty much any two European countries have interacted at some point so - you want to write a fic for England and Denmark? boom, viking invasion. you also have all of the “national stereotype” humor to work with. wanna ship Switzerland and Belgium? chocolate shop au. if you can come up with something thats fine because the hetalia fandom is super accepting of “crack” ships Hong kong and Iceland is pretty common. why? i have no idea. they’ve only interacted in canon once. its also worth remembering that - while hetalia is a comedy. there is lots of canon or historical/fanon angst. just to list some canon examples, russia slowly going insane, the baltics living in the ussr, italy losing holy rome, the american revolution. there is a way to write any genre into hetalia and thats just canon based content. i havent mentioned aus yet. obviously human au’s are common and can be set in any era. so you can take the same event and write it both as a nation living through it or as the character as a human in the nation living through it and get two different stories. you could also just entirely ignore the historical theme and use a college/highschool/etc au. bc the characters a well developed enough that they can be well written even outside the canon plot Tldr : hetalia is great source material for content creators and doesn’t get enough credit
