It was rare, but not unusual, for Blutarch’s or Redmond’s mercenaries to be sent outside of Teufort to complete jobs aimed at ensuring the victory of one or the other brother. Train and coach robberies, intelligence stealing, raids for resources were tasks every one of them was accustomed to. For the Spy, they had been part of his daily life since his teenage years.
He hadn’t really warned anyone of his departure when Blutarch had decided to task him with a particular mission: use his old skills as a former gold digger to investigate a possible mine, four days from Teufort. Maybe he had mentioned to their Heavy Weapons Guy, or to their Pyrotechnician, he couldn’t remember. Four days ride, a whole week on site, digging into the river and spying on other diggers, four days ride back. Quick and easy.
He jumped down his horse, looking forward to changing from his dusty, worn-out travel clothes to his usual attire, and was on his way to his assigned quarters when a familiar figure appeared on the porch. “Tobias.” He greeted the Engineer with a nod and stopped in the doorframe to the main building. “What did I miss? Anything interesting these last two weeks?”
