May I ask why Julia Roberts was 'disgusting' according to you the night she won her Oscar? I remember her being all over the place, too happy to really compose herself, and that Valentino made her look really stunning. Please don't tell me your one of those women who cringe because another woman takes up the entire room. In my opinion you're allowed to when you finally is awarded with the biggest honor in your career.

Please don’t tell me you are one of those women who immediately jumps to jealousy just because I didn’t like the way a woman behaved. Why on earth would you assume this? We want to break the jealous female stereotype, yet SO many women insist on reinforcing it. But I digress…

First, I don’t dislike Julia Roberts at all. And this event was almost 15 years ago, so I’m sure she is a very different, more grounded individual than she was then. But I did absolutely cringe watching her - but not because she “took up the whole room.” It was because she came across as the most spoiled, narcissistic poster-child-for-the-negative-impact-of-fame I have ever seen in my life. Not only did she disrespectfully go on and on in her speech, rudely referring to the conductor trying to play her off as “stickman,” she was SO wrapped up in HER fucking moment, she forgot to thank the real Erin Brockovich who was sitting in the audience (and Julia won for portraying her courageous story). Now, I know people forget to thank their spouses and it’s a big moment, nerves, blah, blah but everyone knew Julia was going to win that year. The writing was on the wall…she could’ve at least made damned sure if she thanked no one else, she thanked the real hero. 

There was a great piece by Brian D. Johnson that was published in Maclean’s magazine (like Canada’s “Time”) after the Oscars that year where he talked about how much Julia had changed since the first time he met her and how embarrassingly she behaved at the awards. He also said it was a tragedy that Hollywood celebrated someone like this without even nominating the real Performance of the Year: Gillian Anderson in The House of Mirth.
