I don’t know whether it’s all of Australia, or just my state. But this passed year they brought it ‘Oscars law’ which, prohibits pet shops from selling animals from puppy & kitten farms, (the female dog is kept in deplorable conditions, forced to have as many babies as quickly as possible). They also aren’t killing off the animals that aren’t ‘sellable’ or get too ‘old’ (more than like 3 months) before selling. If they want to sell animals now, they have to team up with a rescue & adopt out their animals.
I was just thinking how strange it will be in 20+ years telling kids; there use to be pet shops in the shopping centre in glass cages. Everyone would stare at as they walked past & buy on whim. You didn’t have to go to a rescue or search for a reputable breeder who treats their dogs well. I hope that people will be disgusted to think you could pick up a cute puppy or kitten so easily, not caring what a animal suffered through for them to be there. Not thinking through the life long commitment you’re making when this dog or cat isn’t ‘a cute little kitten/puppy anymore’
I walked through the shops the other week & saw one of the last standing ‘pet shops’ which held out selling these ‘farmed’ animals until the law was official. It’s so good not seeing animals in their still existing glass cabinets. It would be better to see rescues in there, but I’ll gladly take none.
