War of Attrition - Part Two

There's a god laughing at you somewhere, you're sure. Some patron saint of mixed blessings is having a field day, at minimum.

You have the most beautiful woman you've seen in ... quite possibly your whole life is sitting on the customer side of your wide counter, leaning on her elbow, watching you knead and mix the dough. The air is warm and sweet scented from this morning's prep. The morning sunlight is trickling in, softly golden, giving her an unreal illumination. She looks at you and for an impossible moment, you're almost sure that if she kissed you, the world would break open and you'd ascend to some higher plane of understand.

Tick tick tick.

You take a deep breath, feeling it through your lungs, pushing down the surge of irritation.

The other part of this mixed blessing is toying with the bits and bobs you decorate your windows with. Every step he takes, every thing he touches, you want to hiss at him. You want to snap.

Sure, yes, they're both beautiful. But while she's sweet and charming, he's pretending to be an idiot. Definitely pretending, because the subtle twitch of his lips says he knows what reaction you're trying not to give him.

You smack the dough down on the mat harder than necessary, rolling it into balls that'll swell three times their size before you have the rest sorted. "Are you intending to poke at everything in my shop?" you finally snap, and he looks at you, turning clumsily to do so, all wide-eyed innocence and then mild embarrassment.

Your eyes narrow. He doesn't *feel* embarrassed.

"Sorry," he says, holding up his hands to signal surrender. Osha giggles, and you feel yourself soften just a little.

Even her name is perfect. Osha - like the tide coming in during the summer, begging to be sighed out. She keeps engaging you in conversation despite your distraction but you'd be damned if you could remember a word of it.

The buns, once baked, was sweet and light. The filling you make is with a local fruit that has a refreshing taste and cream. You give two to Osha.

"Osha," he says, with a playful whine. "You're not going to eat both of them, are you? Those look delicious."

You roll your eyes and shove a third one at him. He beams at you, undeterred by your unimpressed glower. "I knew you'd warm up to me," he says, just to poke at you again.

"Say that again when the wolfberries kick in." He looks scandalized, then pouts, more exaggeratedly when Osha laughs again.

"This is amazing. We've got to get some work done. Do you just sell in the mornings?"

You nod. "Evening doesn't sell as well," you say, starting to clean up. "But I could be convinced..."

She grins at you. "I'll try to be extra convincing, then," she says, walking backward to the door. Qimir follows, with a glance back, but you're already turned towards cleaning up, thinking of what you'd make her in the evening.

[Qimir x reader x Osha - eventually. We do love triangles not love V's here. Nothing explicit in this chapter, definitely in later chapters.]

You didn't like him as soon as you saw him. No one was that pretty and that socially awkward at the same time. You had the feeling he was having a bit of a laugh, especially since Widow Moyer had been around by the shops three times just to catch a peek at him.

You thought it especially weird how little people seemed to notice him at all. Like their eyes just sort of passed over him, filing in the blanks. Your bakery had a stall that you ran every morning, and that was the biggest money maker most days. People loved a fresh, hot breakfast they barely had to pause to get. It gave you a good chance to eavesdrop, too.

The story was that he was helping out his wife's uncle, but you knew Ekele had no family. You also knew that he occasionally did a bit of smuggling, so you turned the idea over in your head that he was having someone watch his apothecary while he was off getting up to more trouble than a man his age shoulder.

You hadn't seen the supposed wife, so you sweep your gaze along. Subtly, you think, looking for a woman that would match this scruffy looking man. In the process, you make eye contact with him. It's brief. He'd glanced over, you think, while talking to the Widow, and it so happened that you had met gazes.

But that doesn't quell the shiver that runs up your spine. The terror of being perceived, you think with some humor, giving yourself a mental shake. But nothing shakes the piercing intensity that came with that eye contact. You pack up the booth for the day, though there's little left, and head back inside.

You go to bed early, not long after the sun sets and you're up before the sun rises. Cooking and baking. Making the fresh breads and patisseries for the day. Dawn is coming up as you put out your goods. The morning goes predictably. By mid morning, you're out of most of your bread, all of the gimbap, and most of your morning pastries. The man at the apothecary meanders out for a bit, and you see his gaze scanning. They light on your booth, just as you have an ebb in customer and he starts to meander over, shoulders hunched, all contained and slightly awkward like he was a gangly youth and not a grown man.

Making himself small. Your eyes narrow slightly.

"Oh, good, you're not sold out today," says a voice, breathless. Your attention immediately reorients as you blink to drop that expression for something friendlier. The woman looking back at you from the other side of the booth is beautiful. Those big eyes on you, the way her full lips quirk up on one side, the colorful braids framing a delicate chin and smooth skin - a rich brown, with a radiant warm undertone.

You give yourself a little shake, feeling your cheeks heat up. "You're just in time," you offer. She grins, with even white teeth.

It's not that you believe in love at first sight but boy, does looking at that woman make you want to.

"You had citrusy buns last time," she says, helpfully. You blink a few times before thinking about it. "Oh, right. That was for the festival. The offerings for the temple. Do you like citrus best? I could... whip you up something," you offer, and there's something flirtatious and amused about the way she looks at you. A slight crinkle at the corner of her eyes, the way she leans in just a touch.

"You'd do that?" She tilts her head. "I don't want to put you out."

"It's really no bother. Today's a slower day." Probably. Maybe. You really just want to do something to give her an excuse to linger.

She straightens up, and says, "That would be amazing. Could I get two? My husband will pout if he doesn't get one." She jerks her thumb to the side and you look over to see him. The one you don't like.

Your eyes narrow out of reflex. This was the wife? This was her husband?

You turn back to her with a smile that's a little tighter. "Sure. Let me see what I can do."
