You brought up one of my fav speculations in a podcast.: If it WAS a trope here, how do you think the girls would look different transformed as senshi vs normally, assuming the "look" is based on personal wants, or maybe something subconscious? (Do you think it would matter if they were told beforehand?) I know you mentioned you liked the uniforms becoming less... er, uniform over time.
Oh if we go not just with “they need to be bigger to fight better” but “The power taps into the things they’ve always wanted, and gives it to them, as a sort of seduction that they don’t even know is happening” I think the way they look could be affected in a REALLY interesting way. I dunno if I’m willing to go with all of what I might say if I was sitting around a table with people I knew, BUT HERE:
I think Mina’s tits would get bigger. I also think she would notice this, but I think she would be like, “Oh, fucking SWEET” while Rei rolls her eyes because MINA PLS. She’d also have sweet tattoos that glitter inexplicably.
Haruka would get taller even though she is already tall, and she would get broader and more muscular, not so noodly but with firm shoulders and a straighter line.
Rei would have her hair turn that purple-black we see sometimes in anime stuff, and her eyes would glitter like they had embers in them, glowing and threatening, and her voice would deepen and enrich, and Mina would make fun of her for being a self-insert in some Harry Potter fanfic, and Rei would explode, and Mina’d be like, “Uh, typical Gryffinscalehouse much?”
Usagi would make herself less chunky yet funky, with like, Rapunzel hair no matter how many times Mina screams “THAT’S SUCH A TERRIBLE IDEA!!”
Mako I can’t decide on for reasons, so I have no answer.
Michiru looks the exact same. The only form she wishes for is the form of victor, and she hardly feels her current flesh simulacrum is unequal to the task.

are they really as delinquent as folks seem to say, or just the usual parrot behavior
they’re exactly as cheeky as described in media about them. i’ve only seen captive ones that have more incentive to behave but in the mountains where they live wild people have to kea-proof all of their homes and trash cans because they can, will, and MUST get into things and take stuff apart. they’re infamous for tearing the rubber lining and windshield wipers off cars. even the ones in the zoo aviary were very invested in getting to chew my camera lol
Your OW posting reminds me, it'd make a lot more sense to me and fit way better with McCree's meta-insistence on being this big old cowboy stereotype if he'd been, like, the kid of a native woman and some poor Irish settler and grown up on a reservation like some generic western film protagonist
schrodingers person of color mccree is so fucking funny to me in the saddest way cuz people spent 2 years hyping his character from the ground fucking up turning him into like..this.. messiah of nonwhite representation, a fictional cowboy that’d actually reflect the southwest before it was so whitewashed by american media, but theres just NO way blizzard would have ever wasted their time on a narrative like that so now you just have the blandest character in overwatch and people are still drooling over the notion of him maybe being mixed race in spite of blizzards track record of total social obliviousness and his line in-game where he goes “thats how the west was won!” in actual, joking reference to the domination and colonization of western indigenous civilization. so anyways play minecraft with me

the idea jed is a little more magically skilled over the others wrt youma would be a nice touch to explain why he's kept around
So I write fanfiction and I do headcannon that Nephrite is the weakest in control over “magic” among the Shitennou!
This episode makes me think that his Youma is all battle instinct/following instruction with no brains. Earlier we see it knows to use its skills to split up and pursue it’s target at all cost. This scene that I gifed makes me think 2 things:
The Youma is hella dumb to not even realize the two girls are running in the opposite direction. They haven’t even turned the corner yet there is no excuse to say you can’t find them! OR,
The Youma actually doesn’t care! Oh the immediate targets aren’t in front of me anymore, so now I must go after the crystal. It’s actually ignoring Mars and Usagi’s existence because it’s only focused on the jewelry box Mercury has!
We do see Nephrite as quite the single-minded brute later in the series, so maybe it is partially intentional? That, or again I’m reading too much into things when the scene was just poorly executed for plot convenience. lol
@oshkeet
the musicals fixed it by not really dwelling on it, but I hate the series lost the comic's original "Mako/Usagi/Minako fangirl over a hype thing, while Rei & Ami can't be bothered" setup. It gave some variety, while this feels kinda artificial and a shill to have all the girls mutually excited over the same things
Now that I think about it, the show actually used to be even better than that about it. They usually swapped around with Minako, Rei and Makoto over who was into what with Usagi, which showcased that that girls do have different tastes even when Usagi will give anything a try if it’s with her friends.
I’ve repeatedly mentioned that in this new season, the Sailor Team rarely even contributes to the story, and now that I think about it more, a lot of time they are all basically the same character. Like, when they were written out of the start of the fight in episode 178, it happened because they all managed to trip over the same cat even though only Usagi’s foot hit it.
You remember how I criticized the Amazon Quartet of being too much of a cast herd? Well the Sailor Team in this season is more like a hive mind, like the Delightful Children From Down the Lane or something.
It’s ironic. Sailor Moon is the most iconic magical girl franchise, and my favorite series of the genre, W.I.T.C.H., actually ended up with the same problem within the last stretches of the comic. All the girls started out with their own hobbies: one was into bands, one was into art, one was a swimmer, another a figure skater and one of them was a dancer. Then, suddenly, near the end of the series, all the girls start dancing and they’re equally driven and skilled as the only girl who’d been doing it for years so that they could tell slice of life stories about a dance school instead of varying things up. The girls just lost all their individuality, much like the Sailor Team in this season.

Always fear the inverse ninja law of everyone’s fractional capability tho. Unless we go Dynasty Warriors or something
they seem to have done okay the last 50 million movies so i wouldn’t worry too much.

It's interesting very early on manga (in that experimental way that didnt come up again) Mamoru actually did have a "make up" henshin catchphrase that was IDENTICAL to the other senshi
oshkeet
also Mamoru reminds me of Chibiusa or Hotaru in they're the senshi whose normal and senshi selves presented atypically because IMHO they're complicated relationship with the identity.
oshkeet
CHibusa had identity issues with her mom and being a princess, Hotaru was conflicted by a literal alien infection giving her a third personality, and I always took it that Mamoru doesn't have a good relationship/perception with Endymion. So their initial senshi presentations are all weird at first.

last thought: i wish they'd bring back the rose throwing thing, but with an in-lore explination its related to growth/healing powers, and they START as seeds he just grows very quickly. A pocket full of those would be more than enough for a day.
@oshkeet I can’t @ you for some reason omg it’s making me nuts what is with that going on today-- BUT--
1) the manga! you mean in the original translation? because it’s not (IIRC) in Kodansha’s 2003 set or missdream’s scanlations, so now I’m SUPER curious and really want to see. I mean, the evidence in the above two versions is enough for me to interpret it as him having had a true transformation all along (seeing as he told Usagi that when it first started he was basically sleepwalking, and I’m sorry but you CANNOT sleepwalk putting on a white tie and tails formal dinner dress while sleepwalking, and when they met he was already magic-leaping stupidly high) and there are multiple instances in the first nine acts where he glances up and literally a moment later is in a tuxedo and right by Usagi (judging by when what caught his attention happened and the amount of time that passed Usagiside before he got there). But as far as I knew, he didn’t have a henshin on panel until Mugen, when he was like ‘Usagi I’m coming to help too!’ and he got the whole naked glowy thing and then a dramatic pose like the girls do, and he didn’t have a PHRASE until Dream when he henshined with Usagi as a power couple CRISIS MAKE UP!!
2 & 3) interesting perceptions! 2 i’m on board with, not so much 3 but i find it interesting either way
4) i actually kind of figured that the way elysion is connected with dreams in the 90s anime, that mamoru was literally pulling the roses *from dreams*. i like both theories O.O
