I hate how anime became popular. I hated it from the moment I noticed public perception of otaku culture turning around. For years I couldn't really explain why tho.
I've always wanted people to treat animation and games seriously, and not just as a stupid entertainment for children and lazy adults. Why would I hate not being beat up for what I like and having people to talk to about all around me!
Maybe it's because I used to be bullied and literally beaten regularly by my peers who only a few years later suddenly didn't find anime a crime and even praised the popular shows. Maybe I'm just mad people now have it easier then I did. But no, that's not it.
I finally figured it out. I miss the old, edgy and cringe subculture of otakus, that despite looking cute was always quite depressive when you really look get into it. It was a real subculture and it got ruined the moment it stopped all being bad to outsiders. Because now people judge not all of it, but pick parts they think are acceptable and which aren't.
I saw a video recently of a girl group performing in some plaza with cafés around offices and all the comments were talking how disgusting and cringe it was that the crowd was almost entirely made of 30 something old men dancing with the girls. Like, WTF, give them a break, they are clearly there in their suit on a lunch break, let them relax and have fun. This happens with any Japanese girl idols and it pisses me off, because male idols are often even more sexualised and only have female fans, but somehow you're a problem only if you have a dick.
I also think another reason why otaku culture becoming mainstream sucks is how shallow everything became. I'm sorry but SAO has more substance and social commentary that Demon Slayer, and recently it feels like we are constantly getting Demon Slayer shit. It's pretty, but there's nothing really going on there under the hood. For as much as everyone and their mother joked how SAO sucks you can't deny how important it felt to all hikikomori. Charlotte is another classic, also filled with edgyness and depression. And those fake us posers on tiktok are saying it's niche ರ╭╮ರ
Now it feels like it's hard to find a show that's not scared of being edgy and cringe. Anime peaked when it was about how, frankly, the world fucking sucks and is unfair - deal with it.
