The army chief of Burkina Faso announced last night that he had dissolved the government and parliament after a day of violent protests against the West African country’s ruler.

Thick black smoke billowed over Ouagadougou as thousands of people surged through the capital, setting fire to the parliament, the city hall and the ruling party’s headquarters to protest against President Compaoré’s plans to extend his 27-year rule.

At least three people were shot dead and several were wounded when protesters tried to storm the house of the president’s brother. Police fired tear gas from a helicopter. (Read more...)
