Built over the ruins of an ancient city, Maldei sits between two gargantuan, crumbling statues believed to represent rulers of the long-dead civilization. The plinths of each are roughly the size of a city block, and the forms of the statues cast long, stretching shadows at dawn and at dusk. The western statue, nicknamed “Delilah,” is rumored to be hollow, and neighborhood folklore speculates as to what, exactly, might be concealed within.

Maldei’s soil is dry and powdery after millennia of agriculture, so it is currently undergoing a massive public works project to introduce aqueducts and irrigation projects, as well as attempts to bolster the soil’s drainage by bringing in more clay from distant lands. Half-built aqueducts stretch across chunks of the city, but though they are new, they have already attracted graffiti and daredevils seeking to free-climb the massive arches. In the meantime, the people of Maldei have survived water shortages by making do with weekly water rations shipped in from rainier climes.
