Thoughts on the Overwatch Kiriko Short
Finally got around to watching the Overwatch “2″ animated short, Kiriko. The animation was fantastic as always, however it appears Blizzard lost a few of its more important writers during this year's fiasco. The dialogue, pacing, logic, and exposition were all noticeably a little more awkward/fumbled than previous shorts. For me, the greatest example of all of this is the failure to establish Kiriko’s mother. We spend so much time with the mute girl that they have to rush setting up this far more important character. Had the dialogue been especially efficient that wouldn’t have been a problem, but alas they don’t manage to define much outside of "generic disapproving parent." They ATTEMPTED to make her seem overprotective and patronizing by having her bring a vacuum, groceries, and a SWORD when visiting, but this absolutely falls flat the moment fighting starts, when she opts to hide behind a door while men actively shoot at her child. A REAL mother (ESPECIALLY the sort that just casually carries a sword and says things like "I can't lose you too") would have attempted to intervene, regardless of how dangerous doing so would be. Had the door somehow been barred and they displayed the mother desperately TRYING to get out and help, I could've bought it. Instead she just watches from the peephole, which somehow has a vantage to everything that's happening down the hallway. What would've worked MUCH better is if she DID intervene and was the one who got shot, instead of the handyman. The mother getting saved by her daughter would have been an easy way to justify her change in perspective. The close call also would have helped set the ground for their emotional climax, plus justify Kiriko remembering how much her mother means to her and cares about her, better fuelling her decision to return home. Also it would’ve allowed them to roll their two separate emotional climaxes into a single scene, which would’ve helped a LOT. My guess for this noticeable incoherence between what characters say and what they actually do is that they were halfway through writing this short when the strikes started, and it had to be finished by different writers.
“You best move on now”
