Rewatching the first episode of gozyuger, I don't think I appreciated it enough the first time around that Hoeru chose to risk putting on the ring explicitly to protect Natsume.

And the weird throne deliberately shows him Natsume struggling to protect everyone from the giant robot to get him to make that choice.

Bouquet tells him it's basically suicide, but he looks at Natsume fighting and puts the ring on anyway.

The most recent episode sets up the same choice again, but the first time he was being challenged to risk giving up his current life: a life he finds miserable and meaningless and lonely.

This time, he's shown his friends fighting again, and he makes the same choice again, but this time he's being asked to actually give up an alternate happy life with a family that loves him and a bright future. It's a potential life he does value and want. He gives it up to protect his friends again.

But he can reject that life with a smile, because his current life isn't miserable and meaningless and lonely...It's not something he can casually give up anymore...
