Character Information

Ever since they were a child, Raine knew a lot would be expected of them. Their older half-sibling, a member of the Emperor’s Coven, high ranking, leaving big footsteps for them to follow in. Raine was enrolled in a prestigious magical school, there because of their promising power as a sorcerer. And although their methods for casting spells were a little… different, there was no denying their talent. Though from day one at the school, Raine didn’t feel like they fit in. They were different from everyone else by more than just their method of magic. As they grew, they found themself more and more, figuring out who they were inside and out. The only problem with any of that was the fact that Raine was at the school on scholarships. So anything that could be seen as rebelling or causing problems was a big no-no. Unfortunately, Raine wasn’t ever one to sit still and be quiet.

It was at a magic tournament, a place for the best and brightest students of the schools to first be seen by the Emperor’s Coven. And while Raine’s technique was different, their score still came out nearly flawless. Their whole scholarship rode every year on their performance here. And when it came time for a solo demonstration, Raine froze up, unable to cast even the simplest spell in front of the judges. Their teachers were disappointed, their parents were disappointed, but no one was more disappointed in them than Raine themself.

As they got older, now attending Hexside without their scholarship, Raine honed their magic even further. Bard magic was always so strange to anyone who’d never seen it before. And with Raine’s growing performance anxiety, people started to doubt more and more their power. Were they just lying about their abilities? Were they still at a child's level of spellcasting? Did they even have magic at all?

Raine would’ve been content to fade into the background and just keep their magic to themself forever, but it was expected of them to attempt to place in a Coven of some prestige. Just like their sibling had. And against the odds—once again thanks to the anxiety of performing in front of so many powerful people— they found themself a Scout for the Bard Coven. Low ranking, barely placing, but they had! Which was great for them.

It was great, until things started to change. Scouts going missing, strange things said about magic in meetings, the things children were being taught in school. There was something about all of it that just felt… off. It wasn’t until they were a bit older, a bit more known in their ranks, that the Emperor’s Golden Guard ‘retired’. Something about that was wrong. There were no answers about where he had gone or what he was doing or how to contact him. It was almost like Belos wanted them all to forget about him. All of these things piling up led Raine to dig deeper into Coven history than people—the Emperor— wanted anyone to. They started studying all sorts of magic, all sorts of history of the Boiling Isles, trying to find any information they could, spiraling down a rabbit hole of conspiracy theories and rebellious thoughts.

All of this culminated with a single goal. Get higher in the system, learn the system from the inside, take the system down. Raine had never been one to follow the rules, and now that they were seeing the tyranny unfold that so many others seemed so blind to, they knew they had to do something. So they trained, they practiced, they grew stronger. Strong enough that they found themself Head Bard. Being a Head Witch was difficult and a little scary—and involved a lot more public speaking than they would like—but it got them into that inner circle. It got them closer to all the secrets. And being that close to the secrets could be dangerous.

When Darius, the Abomination Coven Head, left to go to some small town in England, any eyes that could have potentially been on him now fell on Raine. They knew Darius must have some similar feelings about everything going on, especially with his old mentor. And those feelings were confirmed when the announcement went out that the current Golden Guard, along with several others, were now enemies of the state. Along with Belos kicking the non-citizens out of the Isles, Raine knew things were ramping up. Tensions were high, stakes were higher. They knew something had to be done to stop Belos, but they couldn’t do it alone.

So, they left the Boiling Isle, going to the last place they knew Darius to be. Whatever the Emperor was planning couldn’t continue. Leaving under the guise that they received an offer from PrideU to teach music studies and Bard magic for a semester, Raine made their way to Swynlake, knowing that the people there could be the last bastion of hope for all the people of the Boiling Isles. And they want to do whatever they can to help.

They say a painting is worth a thousand words, so what is an illusion worth? To the Blight family of the Isles, it’s not worth much. Not if it isn’t Abomination magic, not if it isn’t part of the family business. To Emira it meant everything to explore everything she wanted to explore and test out. And for Edric, it was a safety net.

The boy didn’t have the skills necessary for Abomination magic, as a kid if he didn’t have something attached to him he would forget it. Even now he might forget a thing or two in an illusion but illusion magic is about layering, it might be perfect on the first time but it’s not about perfection its about how the layers all mold together. The site of the blazing sun, then you feel the heat, next you hear that ringing as sun blares down on you, when he’s particularly good he can make you think you smell the burning of asphalt or taste the dryness of the air.

It didn’t matter for if it was imperfection, no one else could pick out those details but him. Maybe Emira… definitely Emira. And that was fine because if there was someone he trusted with all his weaknesses it was his sister. Everyone else, you might only see the confidence that only a Blight of the Boiling Isles would have.

How could you be ashamed of the name when it was as big as it was. He might not have been the kid to take over the family business but his parents expected a good future from him nonetheless and he could easily do that all while pulling pranks and having some fun… well at least until he couldn’t. Edric just doesn’t always know what that line is, his name gives him a lot of leeway and he’s always taken advantage of it.

It might be time he starts facing the consequences of those actions.

It has been one of Hexside Academy’s greatest honors to educate the Blight family for over three hundred years, and once again Miss Amity Blight has been no exception. Since her first day in her Intro to Specialties Seminar, she has demonstrated the utmost in poise, attentiveness, and ingenuity during both lectures and exercises, and quickly became a role model to her fellow apprentices. We worried that placing her so quickly onto the advanced track of magics might see a backslide in ability or confidence, but once again, your recommendation for your daughter was fruitful; Amity rose to the challenge! This year, Amity continued to grow her skills in runic script translation and creation, potion brewing, and reagent procurement to the point of beginning her proposed speciality a term early– and one of our most difficult specialty tracks too. We are especially impressed by her ability to sustain animations and abominations long-term, a feat which must require an abundance of pure magic– second nature to a Blight, of course. We’re extremely pleased with her progress.

With such impressive talent, it’s no wonder that the faculty here at Hexside were heartbroken to hear of your decision to withdraw Amity from the next academic year. We’ve loved watching her older brother and sister complete their track, and would have been excited to help Amity do the same before she joins an official coven. However, family matters are family matters. Please know that despite any rumours from the Blights’ business competitors, or gossip in the Titan’s Digestive, Hexside supports the Blights, just as the Blights have continued to support Hexside as one of our most generous donors.

As requested, we have contacted Swynlake Secondary and provided Amity’s academic record for the upcoming year. [ THE BOILING ISLES ] Basilisks are an endangered species. That’s the first thing you should know. It’s rare to see a basilisk in the wild, often because you never know if you’re seeing one. Their abilities to siphon raw magic and drain magicks are often deemed far too dangerous to other Magicks, often marking them as monstrous.

[ ENTER, FIVE] From a young age, just about when she was learning how to talk, Vee was known as Five. As the fifth, and youngest, member of the Basilisk Colony, they were told that they had to learn to disappear to survive. It was important to learn how to blend into the Isles from an early age. The Basilisk Colony that raised Vee only fed on reagents to keep up their abilities. While raw magic would have made them stronger, the colony believed that their job was to do as little harm as possible and take care of themselves first. Strength wasn’t brute force and overwhelming power. It was perseverance.  Recklessness could get you killed. The colony lived and worked in society, blending in under the pretense that they were weak magicks or gifteds, and hiding their appearance with their shapeshifting. With their combined Basilisk magic, it could be easy to play the part of a low-level magick, someone who could perceive and collect reagents. Their perception was their super-power.

[ VEE ] “Fade into the background” she was told by a tired One, “because that’s the way we stay safe.” So Five did. She was taught by the Basilisks to appear as a human or magick, helping her choose her identity as Vee. Once she reached an acceptable age – 13 – they went to work a job in an apothecary, collecting reagents for the shop owner. Her favorite to collect were types of emotions – sunshine as happiness, moon water as sadness, the warmth of a candle for anger. Which is how she learned that the shopkeeper was angry inside. The fire of the candles in the apothecary were burned into her mind. It was an ordinary Spring day when Vee came home to the perception of the apothecary candles burning the Basilisk Colony. Vee wasn’t sure how the fire started, but she knew then that she didn’t have a home anymore. Her family was scattered, and after days of searching, she had to give up. They might have thought she was a traitor, or they might be gone. It was clear to Vee that she was alone now. Using the remaining amount of money, Vee ended up working at a hotel for a place to stay and money – hiding her identity by feeding on sad rainwater. It was a miserable experience, but it didn’t last long. Only a few weeks before her 14th birthday, a stranger came to the hotel.

[ ENTER, a retired Coven Member ] who had chosen to leave the Coven for a family in America. Visiting family, but a misunderstanding led him to a hotel. And to a quick friendship with Vee. He told her about a place off the Isles where he and his wife and daughter lived. Over the course of a week, the man made a split second decision. He was going to adopt Vee and run. Which was definitely a surprise to his wife and biological daughter when they went to pick him up at the airport, finding they were taking both him and an orphaned basilisk kid home. Vee was a good house guest, but the question of the legality of the thing was in question. They came up with a story and applied to adopt Vee. 

[ ENTER, Vala Anguille ] the legal name of the completely mundus child that her dad adopted from the Isles. The kid of a late, fellow Coven-member. As Vala, Vee participated in all things human! An actual [enby] next-door, thank you very much! Softball, the school newspaper, art classes, theatre !!! All things she never got on the isles. All things she never got to do as a Basilisk on the Boiling Isles. Which could be a problem at times. While Vee was able to get and absorb reagents – happier ones, at that – the fear that someone would figure her out was prevalent. Her new family always said they’d protect her from harm, and her dad did his best until the day he passed the summer before Vee’s senior year.

[EXIT, Her Dad.] Now it was Vee and her mom and sister in Gravesfield, Connecticut.  Trying to help the family in their freshman year, Vee got a job at a local interest museum in the spring term. We can now say that her employment track record isn’t very good. The owner of the local interest museum ended up being someone who was obsessed with the supernatural – the sort of person who would do anything for his own ends. With effort, she was able to be rescued, but it was apparent that Gravesfield was no longer safe.

[SCENE CHANGE, SWYNLAKE] A last minute transfer, to the 2023-2024 school year, Vee started at Pride U, while her mom started working at Pride U as an instructor in veterinary medicine (a perk? Discounted tuition!) Now Vee’s exploring life as an All-Swynlake Basilisk, hoping to put her skills to use in her storytelling ambitions.

Darius was born on the Boiling Isles in a town called Palm’s Sting, located on the hand of the Titan. His parents owned a small general store that serviced residents with reagents and other magical ingredients. Sorcerers by trade, the Deammon family did not participate in the traditional paths of a Boiling Isles family, homeschooling their children in the ways of magic and staying uninvolved in their covens, though they did join to avoid a fuss. More than anything, they wanted to keep to themselves and continue the family business, which is what was expected of Darius and his siblings. However, the young sorcerer had other dreams. He wanted to learn about magic in its fullness, go to school like the other children, and become something great, rather than withering away in obscurity on the furthest reaches of the Titan. This caused a lot of tension with his family, particularly his parents, who did not accept his wishes, nor his blossoming gender identity. Eventually, Darius took life into his own hands, enrolling himself in Hexside Academy and moving to Bonesborough with nothing more than the clothes on his back. While Darius did struggle for some time, it wasn’t long before he caught the attention of a sorcerer who would change his life forever. Caleb Belos, the Golden Guard of the emperor himself, found young Darius doing his Hexside homework on the streets, and decided to take him under his wing. He not only saw great magical potential, but also a kid in need of support, which he was more than happy to provide. He gave the boy a place to stay and helped him find his footing in magic–as it turned out, he was particularly gifted in Animation and Abomination magic. Due to his connections, it was easy for Caleb to help Darius join the Animation and Abomination coven after his Hexside graduation and quickly, he climbed his way up the ranks to eventually become the coven head. For a time, Darius was a dedicated coven head, loyal to the emperor and doing his bidding without question. Then, one day, Caleb disappeared without a word. According to the emperor, his Golden Guard had filed for retirement, and left the Isles to live the rest of his life in secluded peace. It would have been a heartbreaking revelation for Darius, had he believed it. But he knew Caleb better than anyone, better than the emperor himself, and he knew this story had to be a fabrication. While he spent years trying to figure out what actually happened to his beloved mentor, the mystery eluded him and he was forced to carry on business as usual.  Eventually, the Golden Guard was replaced by a new relative of Belos–Hunter, a young boy eager to please. Darius watched on with distaste, but soon began to notice patterns similar to Caleb, particularly in how the emperor treated him. So when Hunter disappeared to Swynlake, he began to fear that history was about to repeat itself. Under the guise of researching abomination magic for the emperor, Darius now finds himself traveling to the small English town to keep an eye on his mentor’s successor. He’s enrolled himself as a professor at the local university, again, to further his “research” and keep up his ruse. But what might he discover in this new, strange world?

There are many ways to rule a kingdom, you can be benevolent, lead by example and make  your subject follow you because they adore you. You can be ruthless, lead with an iron fist and crush all your competition.

Or you could rule in the Underworld, which requires an iron fist but requires respect. King’s Father managed that role with ease. Any challenge was met with a swift power strike but those that wanted to live in their kingdom were let. Don’t be mistaken debauchery and power struggles continued but The King enjoyed his power and when he had a son he made sure he grew up in the same manner his Father had.

With the expectation that one day he would kill his parent and assume the throne. After all, no line of power is passed on by genetics if you were not strong you had no hope to rule. So it became common place to train your kids with the expectations they would kill you when you grew too weak to rule with power.

It was the natural order and the risk ever King took. King’s Father killed his Mother and one day King would do the same. 

But before he was ready there was a challenger more powerful than both the current King and Prince. And they were determined to take over with bloodshed. 

King tried. But by the time he got to his Father, he was bleeding out. His Mother already dead. And King would soon follow. But the older demon loved his son and for his final act he gave shoved an amulet into his hands before pushing him out the window.

As he fell the last thing King saw was his Father being killed.

There was no time to mourn. Not when they were after him as a show of power. 

He had to run and so he did, until he was clawing his way out of the Underworld.

A breath of fresh air, an amulet covered in blood it was too much for the young demon to handle. Not when everything was taken from him. Collapsing at the foot of the forest he could only be thankful later that someone had found him.

Since when he awoke, all King had was a fragment of his name and an amulet that hid what he was.
