Echoes of an Eclipse - Small POV: Gojo

This is a small POV from Chapter 6 of my fic in AO3, you can find it here! If you haven't read it yet I recomend to skip this :)

He adjusted his yukata for what felt like the fifth time. It was important to make sure everything went perfectly for Tsukiko, even himself. She hadn’t said anything outright, but he could see the excitement in her eyes, how much she had been looking forward to that night, constantly asking about the fireworks and the traditions.

He picked up the small bag resting on his bed. Inside was a pin shaped like a white lycoris. He had bought it for her to wear that night, but he needed to give it to her before the others arrived. The thought of his friends knowing it was from him made him uneasy.

He knocked on her door and waited, too nervous to call out or tease her about always being late. But the voice that answered came from behind, making him jump.

“She’s not coming,” Shoko said, eyeing him up and down. “She got assigned to a mission with Geto.”

His stomach dropped.

“What? But she’s been waiting for this for weeks. How could they send her?”

Shoko shrugged but didn’t respond, at least not until she noticed the bag in his hand.

“What’s that?” she asked, her tone teasing.

He looked down at the bag, thinking about what he had wanted to say, what he had hoped for that night; the chance he'd just lost.

“Just a grandma pin I found lying around,” he said, handing the bag to her. “Here, you can have it.”

She hesitated, unsure whether to accept it. But they both knew what it really meant, even if Gojo had never said it out loud. She took it anyway, if only so he wouldn’t feel worse than he already did.

“Thanks. Let’s go. We could take some pictures for her.”

He nodded, and together they headed to the river. The streets were alive with the soft chatter of couples walking around holding hands, the scent of grilled food in the air, and distant bursts of laughter that should have made the night feel warm and full. But his mind wasn’t there, it was somewhere far away, chasing the echo of a moment that would never come.

He imagined Tsukiko walking beside him, her eyes lighting up at every stall, her laughter cutting through the summer air like wind chimes. He had pictured it all so clearly, her smile when he gave her the pin, the way she might've thanked him, maybe teased him a little. He had held on to that image like a promise. Now, it felt like trying to grasp smoke.

Each step toward the river only made the absence louder.

And for the first time in a long time, he felt absolutely, insanely jealous.

Had a really busy week, I was unable to finish editing the chapter on time :( tomorrow will be difficult too. Hope I can have it all done by Tuesday! But it's 100% worth it because it's Geto's chapter and I really liked itttt

why is it that my writing it's/feels better when I'm depressed? is it a toxic relationship? We will never know.
