Transparency while writing - Let me show you my resources! (Long Post)
Over the discussion of AI use in AO3 that started on twitter, escalated to TikTok, and now you can find it on Tumblr. I wanted to share tips besides my own process with writing fanfiction.
FIRST: A big important question we need to ask ourselves before we start the discussion about AI is, what is actually artificial intelligence? In the definition, everything that is communication between a machine and a human can be considered AI, as it is a broad category. (So, your computer is AI, your phone, and every time you search for information, because there's a communication in 1 and 0, adapted for regular use with a machine.) So when a page says it uses AI, we need to make sure if it's a marketing strategy to look "advanced" or if they actually are using a specific system. (You can find more discussions about it in HERE.)
What is actually wrong and people fight against a lot is the use and exploitation of resources for generative AI like chatbots and other proxies (OpenAI with ChatGPT, Google with Gemini, Microsoft with Copilot, and the most famous one for now: Claude) The whole business is horrible but because of how is funded: Stealing data to feed the machine (Art, books, habits, personal information about health, writing styles, communication, etc.), consuming a harmful amount of potable water to run cooling systems for servers to hold this information, and the worst of them all: fund war.
Besides many other topics, like the consumed media, they have reinforced gender roles, racism, and classism, as it doesn't really have a filter of what is good or bad. The developers decide what is filtered or not (and don't get me started with the whole non-consensual NSFW shit with Grok).
Now, keeping those things in mind, many people still think or find the use of these bots indispensable, whether it is for work, studies, or now, writing. A big part of this is because it feeds a lot into the insecurity of people. Why risk asking someone if what I'm doing is correct and embarrassing myself when I can ask something that doesn't feel and won't judge me in the long run? Others find it practical to just ask for a lot of information in one place, even if the same bot constantly tells you the information is not accurate, so you end up doing double the work, searching, then verifying if it's true. (All this is making you dumber, btw.)
Even if your reasons may vary, it is important to not allow this to limit us and remember that learning has to be a tremendously wonderful experience and not something to be frown upon. Learning gives you confidence, improves your mood, trains your memory, creates friendships, and, in our current time, where everything is trying to be behind a paywall, is an act of revolution.
Flesch-Kincaid Readability Test: This is designed to indicate how difficult a passage in EnglishĀ is to understand. You can check in the same page what each level means. I personally use it not to really influence my writing but to maintain consistency on the style. I can't have one chapter being a score of 90 while another go as difficult as 30. I like to personally keep it between 60 - 70.
Thesaurus: I FUCKING LOVE THIS PAGE SO MUCH. You can search not only for the meaning of words but also for the synonyms, antonyms, and examples on how to use them with official real-world documentation and their resources. You can search for full phrases, writing tips, and cultural words that could help a lot depending on the historical time of your story. They also have the Dictionary side that has mini games too!
Phrontistery: Like the one mentioned previously, this is focused on lost/uncommon words that could be very helpful for fantasy or medieval settings. (The page has not been updated since 2021.)
VocabTrainer:A fun way to expand your vocabulary is by doing daily games. Each word comes with a definition, an image (if applicable), and examples on how to use them. I like to do this in the morning with my breakfast lol.
LanguageTool: A page that corrects your grammar (punctuation, commas, etc.). They also have the rephrasing tool that will edit your writing depending on the style you are searching for. If your English level is around C1-C2, I don't recommend using the rephrasing tool unless you want to change something very specific (you can do that with the thesaurus).
Quillbot: Similar to LanguageTool, but this is heavily supported by generative AI bots. The only thing I recommend is to use the AI detector in case you have doubts about something you are reading (itĀ is not 100% accurate) and the plagiarism page to check for possible stolen content.
Microsoft To-Do: This will help you a lot to keep consistency in your writing. I usually make lists not so much of the action I have to complete per chapter but more to have a bullet list of non-negotiables that i always check when I'm writing. You can replace it with any other bullet list app of page really.
Ellipsus: I LEAVE THE BEST FOR LAST. Ellipsus is a writing app made for and by writers who want to escape the AI slob that is used in common writing tools like Google Docs and Word. They have released a pay-to-own in case you want to support their work and have a few extra gadgets available (the use of the app is completely free). I absolutely love how aesthetic and customizable it is, and they always listen to users feedback. Something else they have (I think is in the plus version) is the ability to have an open chat with collaborators/beta testers and a metric to share your writing process. I have been using it for almost a year now, and I can promise it's only improving.
That's all I have to share today. The intention is not to shame people or ban them from ever writing again, because I know many people can be so harmful, but to open the space to learn, share, and help others that may not have the support or the resources to start or even improve themselves. Even I used to use ChatGPT at the beginning when it first came out, but I stopped and focused on doing things for myself as a hobby and to remember that the enjoyment and beauty of art (because writing is an art form) can be through imperfections.

I canāt believe that in order to tell a story I need to withhold certain information from the reader at first. Iām excited about it and I want them to know.
This is a small POV from Chapter 19 of my fic in AO3, you can find itĀ here!
If you havenāt read it yet I recommend you skip this :)
Gojo hated the smell.
He hated the humidity, the noise, and the presence of all the pathetic people attempting to be bigger than what they actually wereāfollowing his friend as if they helped him do anything at all.
Geto walked in without a word.
"You came here all on your own? I'm flattered," he declared with a smile before sitting. "To what do I owe the pleasure?"
Gojo didn't turn away from the old, dusty window. He didn't lift his blindfold; he just stayed there, watching.
"The theatrics are slightly pathetic, you know," he finally turned. "You killed them all."
Geto laughed, dropping his head back against the couch as if his friend had told the funniest joke in the world. "Is that the reason? Is it finally my end? Is the strongest one going to pass a sentence?"
Gojo didn't take the taunt. "I let it slide because of what they did to Amanai, because of what not having them here represents." He avoided voicing the fact that he had wanted to do it too, on countless nights where the burden became unbearable. "But you can't do that again. You can't commit mass murder and expect to walk out without consequences."
His friend rolled his eyes at the declaration, completely disappointed by what he was hearing. "Consequences. As if those actually mattered to you. You are repeating a script. From the higher-ups, maybe? It doesn't fit you."
Gojo stared at him for a moment.
"They matter to you. You think Tsukiko would tolerate it?" The words came out way too easily, surprising him.
Geto kept his smile, but Gojo knew the comment had reached him. He saw it in Geto's stillness, in the way he didn't clap back immediately. He saw it in the way Geto avoided looking in his direction, as if the words had not been said out loud at all.
When Geto finally spoke again, his voice held pure amusement, as if he were speaking to a little child. "So you also worry about people you haven't seen in what, years?" He breathed out something close to a chuckle. "Is that what this is, then? Concern not for the masses you are meant to protect, but for an individual. A selfish thought; I never knew you had those."
"I have plenty of them. Especially when it comes to you. You don't seem bothered when it's the other way around."
Geto's smile grew, even if it didn't reach his eyes.
"I should be grateful then. To be your friend." He finally stood up. "What a heavy burden, to deal with each other while being the strongest. I'm sure it is not easy."
Gojo didn't answer right away, not even when his friend reached out, placing a hand on his shoulder.
"That's the difference," Gojo declared slowly. "It's not a burden for me, Suguru."
A knock on the door stopped Geto from answering. Manami walked into the room, ignoring the man with the Six Eyes standing there with her Leader so casually.
"You have a visitor, sir. Kaguya Tsukiko is asking to see you."
The air went still as both of them processed the information. For Geto, it was the perfect timing to rub it in his friend's face, even if it was childish. She was here to see him, even after what he had done, even if she probably wasn't aware of it yet.
He slowly turned toward Gojo, a condescending look in his eyes.
"Please excuse me. It seems I'm quite required these days. Thank you for your visit, Satoru."
A wave of spambot guest comments claiming to be AO3 volunteers has recently been made across the site. They claim that there has been a data breach and that fraudulent password reset emails have been sent out. In addition, the harassment spambots are now accusing users of being sex offenders.
These claims are not true. These comments are not being made by real AO3 volunteers or users, and AO3 has not experienced a data breach.
These comments copy existing AO3 usernames in order to make their accusations seem more legitimate. They may also try to lure people onto other platforms, similar to the art commission scam.
AO3 volunteers will never communicate with you through guest comments on your work. All important communications from AO3 about your account will be sent via email. More general announcements will be posted on our official social media accounts or published as news posts on AO3 or OTW.org.
If you want to make sure you're doing everything possible to protect yourself and your accounts, our Policy & Abuse volunteers published a news post earlier this year with advice about internet safety best practices: Protect Your AO3 Account.
As always, we recommend that you do not click on any suspicious links or give your contact information to scammers. Instead, simply mark the comments as spam or report them so that Policy & Abuse can remove other comments left by these spambots.
If you aren't sure how to mark guest comments as spam, learn how to handle them below the cut!
As these comments have so far all been from guests, our advice is to flag them as spam to better filter them out. To do that, simply follow the instructions below:
If the comment is on your own work:
Go directly to the comment on your work, either by clicking on the link in your email or in your AO3 inbox.
Click on the "Spam" button to mark the guest comment as spam and remove it from your work.
Note: The "Spam" button only appears when viewing a guest comment directly on your work. This is because the AO3 comment inbox is merely a copy of the work's comments ā deleting a comment from your AO3 inbox does not delete the comment from the work itself.
If you see comments like these on someone else's work:
Feel free to let the creator know the comment is from a bot, and that they should mark it as spam.
You can also report the comments as botspam via the Policy Questions & Abuse Reports form linked at the bottom of every page on AO3.
If you are reporting multiple guest comments, please submit only one report, and include all comment links in your report description. (You can get the direct link to any comment by clicking the "Thread" button on the comment, and then copying the URL of that page.)
If you're not sure if something is a spambot comment, you're welcome to contact Policy & Abuse for assistance. Refer to the original post for more information!
