I think people (writers included) greatly overestimate the amount of resentment both mai and ty lee would feel towards Azula. They had one bad day and almost got into a big fight.
Like sure, Mai is gonna be upset about Zuko nearly dying, but like, she throws knives at people for fun, she'll get over it.
And yea they got put in prison but lets be serious individuals here for a minute, (A) they're nobility they're not going into genpop with murderers, and (B) they did literally aid and abet a prison escape of vital POWs and attacked a member of the royal family are you really going to be shocked when you get locked up for a day before your noble parents come get you?
I genuinely think Mai would have gotten over it in a couple of weeks just so that she could pull rank on Azula because she's the fire lords girlfriend so she (de facto) outranks her and can kind of order her around
And when mai and azula "make up" Ty Lee would follow because the whole source of her upsetness is the fact that her 2 closest friends were at each others throats, like she cared about that more than Zuko nearly dying (justified too smh he was so mean to her)
And all of this is not even considering Azula in a debilitated mental state like we see in the comics if they saw her go fucking batshit they're not gonna still be mad at her because they care about her.
Mai and Ty Lee very clearly hold no resentment for any way Azula has treated them in the past, and compared to everyone else in their lives (arguably excluding Zuko for Mai, but he did abandon her without a word, so, arguably), Azula is the only person in their lives who consistently and regularly treat them with a degree of respect and acknowledges their unique talents as individuals. She gives them oppurtunities and she lets them directly disobey her if they simply don't want to engage in parts ot a mission (like in the Drill)
She was their best friend for nearly half of their lives, if you asked me, I say at 6 months they'd be willing to hear her out at least, now, if Azula doubled down and called them traitors or abused them verbally, then we can have a discussion about them not wanting to associate with her anymore, but like, I dunno man, I think a lot y'all just haven't ever gotten into a bad argument with someone you've known for a long time before if you think that would permanently destroy their friendship.
