Katha's song of  the week

My song of the week is Eden by the Chinese post-punk band P.K. 14 from the album White Paper.  P.K. 14  is one of the more well-known Chinese bands abroad and they sing exclusively in Chinese.

Fun Fact: In 2008 P.K. 14 was one of five bands selected by the Time magazine as Asia´s best Bands.

Lanzhou homegrown folk music for the masses, a sprawling collaborative soundtrack featuring Beijing’s headiest artists, lo-fi indie folk to wade away heartbreak, and a Malaysian music collective’s take on one of Beijing’s most intriguing electronic producers. It’s a grab bag of earworms in the latest batch of releases, which includes the newest from Low Wormwood, P.K. 14, Uncle Hu, and thruoutin.

Chinese rock.  I’m sure there’s a lot of it around, but I’ve only heard a few.  The first I heard was this P.K. 14 (produced by Steve Albini), followed by Carsick Cars (their release “3″ was produced by Hamish Kilgour, Sonic Boom and others).

You won’t understand the lyrics on this (you’ll have better luck with Carsick Cars), but the production and sound are just outstanding.

Both of these can be purchased from Tenzenmen (I think this is a collaboration between Australia and China).  You’ll get a nice sampling of what the world’s largest population has to offer.
