Plastic: The Lent Remix

Welcome! 

For the past year+, I’ve been doing my best to reduce my carbon footprint. Today I saw a post online that said “The best thing to give up for lent is PLASTIC.” SO, for the duration of lent, I’m going to do my best to avoid using plastic and find alternatives. Any fails that result in me contributing to the plastic terror bonanza that is the earth will be logged here and I can be thoroughly shamed. All victories will be posted as well! Let’s do better!

Working on nailing down my current style from one of those turtle sketches. I’m fighting my need to overwork the drawing- I think this is where I’m happiest at with my rendering, even if it’s a little less realistic than I can achieve. But I also wanted to see how I could translate two important subjects from the story into the same style- starting with jellies and a bag 😛 which will feature in the first of the pages of the story. Plastic pollution may be old news to us now, but it’s no less important to fight it than it was yesterday, or will be tomorrow. I’m thrilled with the current cleanup movements, though! It was a beautiful, sunny day, no clouds in sight — except for me! (But I’m a happy cloud, so I don’t cast any gloomy shadow).

I blinked, and there it was: this massive, horrible, monstrosity of a....

.

GARBAGE PATCH. And a poor little fish was stuck in it too!! I couldn’t help, because I’m just a cloud, but I was so, so sad.

.

All I could see was garbage, garbage, and more garbage. It was like it never ended! Now I really wanted to cry. All those poor marine animals who had to live in this! What would they do if every body of water on Earth became like this? What would we do?

.

Moral of the story is, please reuse if you can and recycle always! Here to spread happiness and remind everyone to stay green! We don’t want any more garbage patches like this one... ☁️🌿

I know I know - another long post about the environment (yay!!). But please if you have the time, read on! The pacific garbage patch (stuck floating in the ocean between California and Hawaii) is now twice as big as the ENTIRE STATE of Texas. It’s so easy to get caught up day to day and not think about all the waste we produce, and where it ends up. Single use plastics are one of the culprits for major environmental degradation in so many aspects (ranging from water and air pollution to waste accumulation, to biodiversity loss!! - that’s the polar bears and turtles people!) a few months ago I started carrying around a reusable set of bamboo utensils from @patagonia and my extra hydro flask straw (and my trusty hydroflask itself of course) and it’s amazing when you actually notice the amount of waste we can unconsciously accumulate. im definitely guilty of forgetting them sometimes, but all efforts count for something! Americans use 500 million plastic straws EVERY. DAY! #saynotoplastic, and bring your own (straws&utensils&bottles&everything!) We’re all on this planet together, so let’s do our part to help protect this place. Oh, and happy #worldenvironmentday! #planetorplastic #pacificgarbagepatch (at Oahu)
