This list focuses on books from a modern pagan perspective, yet some are also more academical and relate to historical and mythological backgrounds. At the end, there are some books about whole pantheons and/or modern pagan practices of worship and devotion. The pantheons are mainly Celtic, Roman, Greek, Ancient Egyptian and Norse.

Please note: I have excluded very short mythological books. I have also excluded books with original historical mythological texts, because this list would get too long. This is a work in progress and I will add new books when I find them. I have listed several deities about whom I haven’t found books so far, but I hope that I can add some later.

»Pantheon – The Norse« by Morgan Daimler

This is a very good book if you are completely new to Heathenry/Asatru/Norse Paganism and related faiths and need a place to start from. Part I covers history, mythology and cosmology. There are also chapters about rituals, celebrations and prayers and about the many facets of Norse magic, for instance runes, Seidr and Galdr.

In Part II, you can find an extensive chapter about Norse deities from A to Z (the Aesir, Vanir and more) and some other spiritual entities, for instance land spirits, the Álfar, Svartálfar, Dvergar, the Dísir and several more.

In the conclusion, the author writes, »I have heard it said that Asatru is the religion with homework and I find that to be true«, encouraging the reader to research, for instance in the books mentioned in Appendix B, which lists recommended reading. In Appendix A, several terms are explained.

Dem Wald, der schon immer unsere Heimat war und mit dem wir tief verwurzelt sind, wohnt eine Seele inne. Das erkannten unsere Ahnen schon vor Jahrtausenden. Sie konnten seine heilige Präsenz spüren, welche so magisch und wunderbar zu sein schien, dass sie nur von den Göttern stammen musste. Deshalb galt der Wald in heidnischen Religionen und Philosophien schon immer als etwas Göttliches. Auch im fernen Osten erkannte man schon sehr früh, dass der Baum als umseeltes Geschöpf eine hohe Form der Erleuchtung darstellte und im Einklang mit dem Rest der Schöpfung ein Inbegriff für die Vollendung und Harmonie der Welt war.

Wicca, Hexen und Heid*innen oft in einen Topf geworfen werden mit gefährlichen Esoterik-Strömungen, bzw. auch dass sämtliche alternative Spiritualitätsformen von Außenstehenden oft als gefährlich eingestuft oder ins Lächerliche gezogen werden.
