I still care, but it's getting harder.
My father, bless his soul, is one of the most difficult individuals I have ever interacted with. Any time I have prior engagements, plans of any kind, and he contacts me telling me about something he wants me to do, he gets insistent and immediately furious if I say I'm unavailable.
Just last week he told me to fuck off because I had plans for part of my mother's birthday, even though I grew up with mom saying all she wants for her birthday is peace and quiet, ever since I was little. I planned to bring her flowers that weekend and attend one of my best friend's birthday party because I care about them both and my friend really needs some love for personal reasons I won't get into here.
I tried to explain as calmly as I could what my plans and intentions were, and trying to be flexible, and my father told me to fuck off.
He uses passive aggressive behaviors, abusive phrasing that reminds me of past traumatic experiences, actively speaks out about my gender and sexuality being a mental illness and a chosen one at that, not realizing I'm queer (it's pretty obvious but I haven't just plain stated it, it's just visible in the way I behave, dress, talk, etc) but then getting angry at me when I shy away from those conversations and I just...
I don't think anyone in my family quite understands what he's doing, but I've researched this shit extensively, both for school research and personal development. He's being straight up abusive, but I can't easily say that anywhere. He uses these techniques, whether he realizes or not, trying to put guilt and shame on my shoulders, and when I tell him I feel like he's doing that, he says if I'm feeling guilt or shame about something that's my own problem, and gets angry I'd dare state he's doing this. But if I don't feel that guilt, or I don't change my schedule just for him, I'm just making things worse.. He has told me I'm his favorite daughter in one breath and in the other says "fuck you." "Get the fuck out of my house." Or I'll open up my heart and he'll look me straight in the eye and say "I don't believe you." "Stop lying." Or "Damn, that acting class was really effective, I almost believed you."
But then, I'll change my plans. I'll reschedule, move what I can around, or flat out give up and cancel everything.
And in moments he acts like everything is okay again.
The day after he said "fuck off" yesterday he told me I was awesome.
He will tell me I piss him off and make him sick, that I don't care and never have, and that it's all my fault so just fuck off and go do what you want. And he accuses my friends of poisoning my thoughts against him and says I shouldn't interact with people who talk shit about him. (To clarify, they don't do that.)
But if I shift my plans, which I always wind up doing, it's like flipping a switch and all the sudden he's fine and dandy, joking around, telling me he loves me, that I'm wonderful, and he misses me.
I try really, really hard to treat my family with love and compassion, but days like these all I want to do is curl up and cry because nothing I do will ever be anywhere close to enough.
...what do I do...? This feels like a waking nightmare...
