Since I just got evacuated from my host country and lost my job, I finished Life Sentence by Paint_Stained_Heart, the sequel to Thawing, the AU where Bucky Barnes is a heroin addict dumped on the doorstep of Steve and Sam, who run a halfway house in Detroit.
(Library note: I am so, so sorry you’re going through so much)
Ok well my Klaine fic “The Side Effect” by paint_stained_heart is definitely a closed-off Kurt brought into the sunshine! Heed the warnings it has a happy ending!!
Thanks @paint-stainedheart. - HKVoyage
The Side Effect by Paint_Stained_Heart
What if you knew too much? Knew when, where, and how people were going to die, down to the last detail? Could you open yourself up to love with that sword hanging over your head? After Kurt’s accident, he’s never the same again. Is a heartfelt rendition of My Favorite Things and a few determined roommates enough to make him love someone who comes with an expiration date?

Steve’s story goes forwards. Bucky’s goes backwards. Perhaps they’ll find a way to meet each other halfway.
Or: If anyone had the fucking courtesy to ask Bucky Barnes what he thought of all this
Hey! I saw your salty questions thing and saw some of your commentary on fic. I'm currently working on a Bucky recovery fic (original I know) but was curious about tropes you like and don't like and what is hopelessly overdone and desperately needed in recovery!fics, and maybe any originality I could bring to the table.
haha it might not be “original” but I totally get why recovering bucky is appealing. For authors i think sometimes to wrap your head around something you just gotta write it for yourself.
Take everything I say with a grain of salt! this is just my opinion!
Most of the recovering bucky I’ve read has been preCW where bucky just shows up on steve’s doorstep one day like a lost kitten and with the sheer power of steve’s selflessness and goodness he spoils bucky into recovery while they indulge in modern pleasures, and pick up on modern concepts (like memes) like they were born in the 1990s. and also the avengers are always there to bend over backwards to help bucky anyway they can with no reservations about him and 100% certain that he is a victim. it’s great indulgent fluff and obviously there are people who enjoy that kind of thing so if you want to write that don’t let me dissuade you! but it’s not the kind of thing i’m into. i like realism and conflict. and people rubbing each other wrong because we’re people and and that’s what we do when we’re hurting. and recovery is about hurting but figuring out how to hurt less.
If i was gonna read recovering bucky i’d want to it be CW compatible with a fractured avengers (where tony isn’t necessarily around to pay for everyone’s therapy)
I imagine Steve wants to help bucky but steve and bucky aren’t “steve and bucky” anymore. i think recovery for them would be figuring out how to even BE them again since they’ve both changed so much and they aren’t the people they were. can they still be friends? do they have anything in common anymore? (the answers are yes but they shouldn’t be automatic). I think sometimes it would be like old times and sometimes it would be like getting to know a stranger.
i also like a flawed steve who tries his best to be there for people but when it gets hard he retreats into some kind of “cause” because it’s easier when everything is black and white vs messy emotions that he’s never been very good at. For me a good recovery bucky fic is ALSO a recovery Steve fic where steve maybe thinks he’s fine and then bucky calls him out on his denial.
I like a bucky who does his very best not to need steve because he don’t want to be just another obligation but at the same time desperately misses his friend.
I also tend to default to them having repressed or forgotten feelings for each other vs an established relationship cause that’s just how i read it. i like there not being a relationship for them to fall back on because if forces them to heal as individuals first and then as friends rather than just relying on their relationship to save them.
In SUMMARY:
What to avoid: healing dick, poor baby bucky just needs a hug and cuddles trope, everyone bends over backwards for bucky. Bucky having a fractured thought pattern like he doesn’t know how to “human” (been done way too much. i imagine moments of confusion where he gets lost in a memory, but when he’s snapped out of it he’s got normal thoughts like anyone.)
What is needed: Bucky being irritable, stubborn and resistant about being helped. Smoking on roofs and having heartfelt conversations about how they’re both fucked up and finding complacency in it. switching (ok this is personal preference but i don’t like when one sexual position is tied up with the healing process. like “bucky can’t bottom because he needs to be in control” bothers me as much as “bucky always bottoms because he doesn’t trust himself to take control but he does trust steve”. sometimes sex is just sex and you want a dick in your ass cause you like dick in your ass. saying that a sexual position says anything about your level of recovery always rubs me wrong.)
