Working on a series of jackets I'm calling Monsters & Madmen

I've already started work on Dracula & the Creature from the Black Lagoon, but which movie monster do you wanna see?

This jacket was originally a standard blue jean jacket. I initially dyed it as black as I could but it ended up dark navy blue. I settled with that for a bit. Slapped a hellhammer back patch on it and called it done.

Well, some time later I acquired black screen printing ink. I asked around when I saw people with painted denim,the answer consistently was acrylic black paint. No one I asked had used screen printing ink. So I grabbed a brush and painted this jacket in sections after taking the back patch off. I used a heat gun to cure the ink as best I could and this is the final product so far.

Other than patching the holes in the jacket idk if I want to add band patches or not, so I slapped some pins on it for the time being. The large pink pin I got by going to a pro choice standout and donating to the group who held it.

Flower Power Thrifted Jeans

A new cafe/creative lounge is opening in small town Tennessee. When I found out they were looking for submissions for an art show as part of their grand opening celebration this May (2024) I just couldn't resist creating an entry.

With the theme being "irises" in honor of the Tennessee state flower and the name of their cafe, "Lively Iris", I knew I wanted to paint something as an entry, and I wanted it to be something a little out of the ordinary.

I thought painting wearable art would be a fun idea, and something I could wear to garden club meetings and field trips, or for teaching painting classes.

When it came time to snap a few pics I sought out local murals for just the right backdrop. I didn't just find one mural with a bright floral theme but five in a row.

The bright colors of lupine, poppies, daisies, red flax and echinacea are a perfect match for the saturated brights I used on this denim.

The irises take center stage on this canvas, with several different varieties of dark and light purple, yellow, white, pink and salmon- the same colors that I planted in my garden this Spring, all taken from cuttings from neighbors gardens.

I'm so glad I sought out this amazing series of murals, hidden away in a quiet little neighborhood in Franklin, TN. It was one of those treasures that you would never see unless seeking it out, tucked away among cottage style houses. What a great idea to beautify a giant concrete wall!

Here are a few process photos showing the evolution of this design. I started with sketching the most challenging of the flowers.

Then I went to town on the irises and leaves.

Next I filled in with bright zinnias and coneflowers, filling in with pale blue forget me nots and and African daisies.

I love how the acrylics really pop on the dark denim! I can't wait to see these on display next week and also can't wait to see the new cafe in person!

Work in progress jeans for electric callboy this thursday. Made and used some stencils, they're not perfect but they're working so.

Next step: preparing for windows, steam, and wheel details. The sun has gone down, but it shouldn't matter for these undercoats.
