I received and email asking about the Palemen. Convenient, as Polar and I were going through the design process for them just last night. Lets have a chat about these critters.
In the lore, the first appearance of the creatures that would eventually be dubbed "palemen" was in a recording made by surveillance equipment on earth, in which the creature systematically destroyed the recording devices while remaining out of view, until it was forced into the sight of the last one due to a lack of alternative means to reach it. It displayed intelligence, cunning, and some degree of technological knowledge, though that last point would be hotly debated for centuries before the real proof came in. It would be generations before they appeared again, during a later expedition, which begged the question: what are they? where did they come from? and perhaps most importantly, what have they been doing all this time?
Palemen are unique in several important ways. For one, they're flesh and blood creatures. while this doesn't seem particularly noteworthy, its a point of major interest when one considers their native environment is Earth, which is currently half-covered by Whisperwerk. At the very least, the palemen seem to be able to avoid them. At most, they're co-existing, which opens up a whole new bucket of worry. Whisper events and palemen sightings are both such rarities that neither has been recorded as having happened at the same time, so its difficulty to tell if they have some sort of relationship, but the anatomy of a Whisper defies conventional physical laws, both in its construction and its operation, suggesting that it has very different origins than the palemen do.
Two: They're intelligent. That much was obvious from the first appearance centuries ago, but the true extent of it was not apparent until their more recent delivery to Mars. They can use machines, steal weapons, operate equipment. Some have even been reported as speaking, and speaking coherently. They can likely read. Reliable reports of palemen sightings are few and far between, but each confirmed one paints a picture of a species every bit as learned and sagacious as vector-kind. Which makes the "where did they come from?" question vastly more important, as its unlikely they could have evolved naturally from the leftovers of Earth over a mere 700 years.
3: They appear to be planning. Palemen are already rarely sighted, and its even more rare to see more than one in any given place, but in almost every reliable report, they have evaluated their situation upon being caught and either fought to kill, or ran away, and were typically found while in the process of engaging in some deliberate task like a break-in. Its impossible to tell if their efforts are coordinated amongst each other, but they are not striking at random or engaging in wanton acts of murder. They're trying to accomplish something, and will flee attackers so as to preserve their chances to succeed. What motivates them is still a mystery

SO APPARENTLY YOU CAN "TAG" THINGS
Life is hard sometimes. Sometimes it takes you a month and a half to figure out a social networking site. Sometimes you get a pomegranate from your mom. C'est la vie.
