It could have been worse. He could have actually been drinking the coffee. If he had been, spilling it would probably have plastered the painfully hot liquid all down the front of his shirt and burning into blisters. That doesn’t mean it isn’t a rather dramatic reaction to drop the cup he’d been moving toward the coffee pot. Thankfully, it doesn’t shatter, although the handle does chip where it hits the counter.

"There." She looks, as almost always, rather pleased with herself. She’s got the usual proud lift to her chin and winning smile on her lips. "I said it."

It takes a moment to get his mouth in working order again. It takes a moment of fumbling to pick up the cup again, to find the piece that’s been chipped off, to set them both down again near the sink and decide against reaching for another cup. “I— Nel, that—”

He’s not sure how she’s closed the space between them so suddenly. He’s not sure how she’s suddenly so warm and close and holding her own cup of coffee up toward his lips with the same ease in her smile.

And for just a second, he thinks he sees something else. For just a second, her eyes aren’t shining with their usual complete belief in everything ending well.

For just a second, she doesn’t look like she knows he loves her too. 

"Nel, that’s— not even close to my middle name."

She remembers to set down her mug before throwing her arms around his neck, at least. She tastes like coffee when she peppers his lips with kisses so he barely has the breath to say it back.
