Being a teacher is not cheap, let alone being a 23 year old teacher on a slim salary. While it pains me to ask for help like this, the help is not for me alone, it’s for all of my kiddos who are going to come in needing lots of support to learn how to navigate this unforgiving and surprising world. My entire school system just shut down because of an outbreak so big that it took out over half the school system on quarantine. There are more student cases after just two weeks back at school than there was even at the biggest peak of last year. The delta variant is no joke and many people around here are finally starting to realize that.

I don’t think I’ve cried about my job this much before. I think this might be the class that breaks me. I don’t think I can do this again next year.

I had to send a kid out into the hall today for the first time in literally a year and he like...didn’t even know how to do it. I had to go out there and be like, “Hello, this is called a consequence. I know you haven’t had one of these in over 365 days and you are in 1st grade, so let me explain. When you are shenanigans and I tell you repeatedly to STOP being shenanigans and you persist despite my warnings THIS IS WHAT WE DO. We come in the hallway and THINK ABOUT OUR CHOICES.”

Dear mama,

I see you. I saw the tears in your eyes this morning as you dropped your kid off at school. I don’t know why they were there. Maybe the holiday was rough. I understand that. Maybe it was an extra long morning because of the long weekend. Maybe your kid said something to you that shattered your heart. Teachers have had it rough this year, but so have moms. They’ve been doing the jobs of so many. Making sure everyone is fed, clean, happy, and healthy. And doing their own jobs. So whatever it was that brought those tears to your eyes, mama; I hope I can do what I can to brighten your day. I hope you know that your kid raves about you at school and can’t wait for you to pick him up. But until you’re ready to do that, I’m here to make sure he has a good day and brings you all the artwork to take up the space on your fridge. I know he already fills up all the space in your heart. I hope your day gets better, mama.

I had to send one of my kids home today because they had a runny nose which made them symptomatic. I was expecting the parent to be kind of frustrated because I know this kiddo has some allergy issues. 

But mom emailed me to thank me for noticing that the runny nose today was abnormal (usually they’re kinda congested and don’t need a tissue but today they used several) and for taking it seriously. 

I was honestly not expecting the thank you and was bracing myself for pushback. But man am I grateful for a thank you.
