Today's Gender of the Day is: Pandrogyne!

Pandrogyny is the idea of neutralizing gender as a potential future for the human species, and is the conscious embracing of gender roles, sexual orientations, or cultural traditions so as to render the person’s original identity completely indecipherable. It predates the term ambinique, which is the blending and blurring of society's gender expectations and gender roles into a uniquely new future gender - one focuses on the eradication of gender while the other focuses on an entirely new type of gender.

"Pandrogyny" comes from the words pan- for "all" and androgyny, but it goes far beyond the idea of its root words and is not the same as androgyny or being an androgyne.

While it is technically a neutral identity, it goes beyond the idea of being transgender or gender nonconforming - thus, it can't quite be called a nonbinary identity, but rather an anti-binary identity. It is seen as an art form that transforms the body into something new and transcends the gender binary. When identities blend to become one idea that is separate and indistinguishable from the original, that is pandrogyny.

(Note: Pandrogyny is the noun form, pandrogynous is the adjective, and pandrogyne is the word for a pandrogynous person.)

All our strategies and choices in terms of art, music, writing, and life have been made in order to construct the most amenable picture of ourself from that deathbed perspective. One finds images, words, phrases, people, strategies, objects, talismans...all kinds of things that one gathers around oneself in order to keep reminding oneself of the discipline needed to create this final person one wishes to become. It's all about reinforcing motivation in order to become something special, something one is proud of at the end of the day, with hindsight. Of course, one never knows how many days one has left. Every precious bit of time one has should be used in the most positive, creative, altruistic way it can be. Lady Jaye described it very simply: "See a cliff, jump off."

Twice I seen Genesis perform. Once in Brooklyn’s Output (r.i.p) when the Red Bull Music Academy had Uniform, Pharmakon, Prurient, herself & Aaron Dilloway, Merzbow, and Marshstepper on the ticket. At the end of Dilloway’s performance, she led the “happy birthday” festivities for all of us to sing for Dilloway. That was five years ago. The summer of 2018 was at The Warsaw with Choir Boy, Black Marble, and Cold Cave. She made a guest appearance during Cold Cave’s set to sing “Comprehension” with Wes Eisold that night. These moments, Porridge or not, made for some of the best times I ever experienced.

There’s not one single industrialist on the planet that hasn’t possessed or experienced Coum Transmissions, Throbbing Gristle, Psychic TV, Thee Temple Ov Psychic Youth (TOPY), the many stories of Lady Jaye, pandrogyny (hence, ‘she’), or the many instances and connections of Industrial Records such as Thomas Leer & Robert Rental, William S. Burroughs, Chris & Cosey, Coil, or Monte Cazazza, plus her many guest appearances with other artists. At this point, you should. There are no excuses.

From Throbbing Gristle to pandrogyny: Genesis Breyer P-Orridge reflects 2015

There have been Throbbing Gristle reunions at Tate Modern, and Psychic TV last played in London at the now-demolished Astoria in 2008 – the band in nurse’s uniforms, playing psych garage rock over projections of medical procedures and sex scenes – but it’s a long time since Genesis Breyer P-Orridge was in London.

Combining a sort of spoken-word memoir with poetry and a closing Q&A upstairs at the October Gallery as part of its Burroughs centenary exhibition, Can You All Hear Me?, the first half was an hour’s impromptu talk about how Neil Megson became the pandrogyne figure there on the dias, long grey pigtails framing a surgically altered, heavy-lipped face. He took us through a life’s work in music, performance, visual art and magic, progressing from 1970s communes in Islington and Hull through Industrial music, COUM, Thee Temple ov Psychick Youth, collaborations with William Burroughs and Brion Gysin, raids on his home by Scotland Yard and American shelter and exile under the wing of Winona Ryder’s dad, Michael Horowitz, and his "pandrogyne" life in with Jaye Breyer (who died in 2009), applying Burroughs’s cut-up technique to their own bodies.
