Since it's finally his "Luffy will be the Pirate King" moment (and Franky's my favorite haha), I was curious about any particulars of his speech in the original text, especially since the two translations I've seen differed in how they phrased it.

so the full sentence is お前あんのか？ウチの船長、海賊王にする気はよ！/omae an no ka? uchi no senchou, kaizoku-ou ni suru ki wa yo!
omae an no ka is kind of a vague question not helped by how casually he says it, but in this case it’s kinda like ‘do/don’t you have it?' and then uchi no senchou is ‘our (crew/family’s) captain.’ i never shut up about the word uchi to refer to pirate crews in this series so i’ll just say the fact that franky uses it here is extra good.
海賊王にする/kaizoku-ou ni suru is like ‘to make the pirate king,’ and 気/ki is in this case a desire/intent for something (and what he was asking about with his opening question).
his second statement also isn’t really a question, it’s more of a declaration (as seen in how it ends with the emphatic よ/yo. so altogether i guess it’s like “oi, nami, don’t you want it/aren’t you in?? we want/we’re going to make our captain the pirate king!!”

like as far as i can see they don’t have the butt spikes? maybe these are just super well preserved and thus not broken/spiky/cracked!! I do think the staffs are awesome! I know the Watcher carried one and so do some in TPS (I don’t recall seeing any in bl1 with staffs? im pretty sure they used their energy claw things) so maybe these are a higher tier of guardian than the ones we see in bl1? (which, if the Eridians wanted us to open Pandora’s vault as punishment for stealing fire the tech on Promethea, then that would make sense)
AND THE CRANES! and the buildings!!!!! is this Promethea’s vault? there’s something in the sky near the moon (?) so i thought maybe that was the asteroid belt but... it’s only condensed in one area..?
it looks like a rocky place (you know, the quasmarian quarry Typhon mentions?!), i could see it, it looks super well-kept!!! my only problem?? it’s not underground/next to a cliff or anything. i guess it’s actually possible with those cranes and shit that it’s been excavated completely
i think we walk out of a temple here, which makes me think this is connected to the temple with all those monster dudes in it (also i can’t be the only one who thinks the blue sparkles on the statue on the far left makes it look like it has a shiny thicc butt. i CANNOT be the only one)

he says 面白い海賊達を見つけた/omoshiroi kaizoku-tachi wo mitsuketa which is “I found (some) interesting pirates.” 面白い/omoshiroi means ‘interesting/amusing/intriguing,’ and he uses it a couple times in this scene.
and then he says ふとお前が昔していたを思い出した、ある小さな村の面白いガキの話/futo omae ga mukashi shiteita wo omoidashita, aru chiisana mura no omoshiroi gaki no hanashi, which means, “(suddenly) i remembered something you told me a long time ago, a story about an interesting/amusing kid/brat in a small village.”
my favorite thing about this scene is that, i pointed out awhile ago that when he shows up on the baratie mihawk calls everybody by the very derisive 貴様/kisama before eventually calling luffy and zoro by the comparatively less rude お前/omae once they’ve earned his respect- in this scene he starts out addressing shanks as kisama but immediately swaps over to omae once he drops the pretense of hostility.
Hello if you don’t mind, can you translate that panel in chapter 967 where Buggy gets sick and Shanks stays behind with him? I’ve seen different versions of it and I’d like to hear your take on it.
yeah, sure! so there’s a few different lines here: oden’s narration, buggy’s complaining, and shank’s comment. they’re all pretty straightforward and don’t require a whole lot of explanation, pretty much everything here translates directly. i’ll start with buggy’s because it’s the shortest- he just says 治った、もう治った!!連れてってくれ!!/naotta, mou naotta! tsuretette kure!! which translates as “i’m healed, i’m already healed! (please) take me with!!”
so then oden’s narration starts 運がいいのか悪いのか/un ga ii no ka warui no ka, which is basically “whether it was good or bad luck,” and then 見習いバギ二郎は突然高熱を出し/minarai bagijirou wa totsuzen kounetsu wo dashi, which is “the apprentice buggyjirou suddenly came down with a high fever.” and then ”最後の島”への航海を断念した/”saigo no shima” e no koukai wo dannen shita, which is “he had to give up on the voyage to the final island.”
then he continues with 看病を買って出たのは赤太郎/kanbyou wo kattedeta no wa akatarou, which is “the one who volunteered to stay and nurse/look after him was akatarou.” and finishes with こいつらは仲が良いのか悪いのか/koitsura wa naka ga ii no ka warui no ka? which is basically “is their relationship good or bad?/do they get along well or not?” (also phrased the same way as him wondering about good or bad luck earlier.)
and then shanks! he says 行くんだったら、おれ達はいつか自分の船で行くよ!/ikundattara, oretachi wa itsuka jibun no fune de iku yo! which translates as “if we go, it’ll be in our own ship someday!” and he uses explanatory form here, which gives his line vibes of ‘it’s fine, because...’
I might be looking too much into it, but when reading some french translations, when Garp was about to drop the Dragon name-bomb, in chapter 432, he says: he (Dragon) told me he saw you in Logue Town, which would be weird since, you know, Garp is a marine and Dragon is… Dragon. So… I looked into it and though that it was a mistake in the french version, but I actually found an english version saying something similar, and another version saying that someone else told him about Dragon in Logue Town, and I don’t know what to believe, so pls help jaja. - @bookwormcloud
Actually, this one is right! What he says is ローグタウンで見送ったと言うとったぞ/rōgutaun de miokutta to iutotta zo, and と言う/to iu is how you report something that someone told you, equivalent to “___ said....”
Technically he doesn’t explicitly specify that Dragon told him, but since the previous sentence is clearly about Dragon- 名乗り出やせんかったのか/nanoride yasenkatta no ka means basically “He didn’t introduce himself?”- we know that the sentence in question is about him too.
Thus, yeah, Dragon told him. To be honest, it doesn’t surprise me- I mean, in this very scene Garp is chatting with his pirate grandson with clearly no intention of actually arresting him, I can definitely believe he and Dragon are on occasional speaking terms at the very least, which is hilarious in and of itself. Do you think he has a denden number for the Revolutionary Army? I want to believe he does.
So, the first online translation of this line was "Hey Luffy, I don't care about the sea without you." and maybe it's because Usopp's my favorite and this shows a lot of growth for him (from someone who quit the crew when he felt he wasn't strong enough to not wanting to follow his dream if it's not as a Straw Hat pirate), but that was my favorite line in all of One Piece.

Anyways you’re right, it’s not that flippant, and in fact fully kicked me in the chest when I first read it. What Usopp says here is おい、ルフィ! お前のいない海なんておれはまっぴらゴメンだぞ/oi, luffy! omae no inai umi nante ore wa mappiragomen da zo!
Inai is the negative of iru, which basically means ‘to exist/to be’ for living things, and umi is ocean. Because of how Japanese works you can use verb phrases as descriptors for nouns, so omae no inai umi is “an ocean where you don’t exist” or “an ocean without you.” And mappiragomen means ‘flatly refuse’ or ‘wouldn’t do for anything.’
So the line should be something like, “Hey, Luffy! I wouldn’t accept an ocean without you for anything!”
hi there! on page 3 of chapter 665 in panel 6 sanji tells zoro "I don't want you coming along!! How come you're the only one who can't share in the joys at hand?!! [ie: sanji being in nami's body]" in the viz translation. does this read exactly how i think it does? because, it's kind of gay vibe and i'm here for it. (also, sanji's being a jerk.)
personally i think almost everything sanji says and does re: the nami bodyswap situation is super non cishet vibes but, anyways,
the first thing he says here is こっちこそ願い下げだ!/kocchi koso negaisage da! in response to zoro complaining he doesn’t even want to come. negaisage is like ‘do not want/refuse’ basically and kocchi koso is a particularly emphatic way of indicating yourself (as opposed to another person) so it’s basically “I don’t want you here either!”
and then よりによってこの幸せを分かち合えないバカは一緒とは!/yori ni yotte kono shiawase wo wakachiaenai baka wa issho to wa! yori ni yotte here means like, “of all people,” kono shiawase is like “this happiness/good fortune” and wakachiaenai is “can’t share” and baka is “idiot” so the whole thing is like, “Of all people, I have to be with an idiot who can’t share in this happiness!”
In chapter 851 (I know you're not there yet but when you get there) in the first double page spread (pages 6-7 I think) Brooke says to Big Mom, "Young Lady, what kind of idiot draws up plans with the expectation of dying?" which I think is just the rawest line ever. I'm really curious as to what he says in japanese and what term he uses for her!
God, we stan. Yes, that’s pretty much correct! He says 死ぬ事を計画に入れるバカがどこにいますか、お嬢さん/shinukoto wo keikaku ni ireru baka ga doko ni imasuka, ojou-san?
Shinukoto means ‘death/dying,’ as a noun. Keikaku (as I’m sure everyone knows) means ‘plan,’ and ireru here is like ‘to include/accept.’ And baka is idiot, and doko ni imasuka is either like ‘where is...?’ or ‘to what extent..?’ and here I think it should be latter.
And then ojou-san does mean ‘young lady’ pretty much directly, which cracked me up reading this. You’d use it when addressing a (young) woman who’s considerably younger than you. Which, in this case, given Brook is 90 and Big Mom is in her sixties, makes it, I guess, technically correct?
So literally it’s like “What (kind/degree) of idiot would accept/include death in his plan, young lady?”
