I've been looking for a new game to play and I was thinking of trying my hand at Dark Souls but I was wondering if the story stretches over the games or if I can play them in whatever order. Since you're the leading authority on this can you please help out?

The first and third game have an intertwined story, so honestly if you haven’t played the first game it’s not like you won’t really be able to follow the story of the third, but you’ll miss A LOT of details. 

Plus the story/lore of Dark Souls is pretty dense to begin with, so it’s kind of handy to have all the reference points you can get.

The second game has a couple of references to the first game, but not all that much and mostly stands on its own.

Personally I’d advise to start with the first Dark Souls anyway, since it’s the best in the series, and it’s also the cheapest ($20 on steam with all the dlc, and during steam sales that usually goes down to $4,99).

so i totally think that x6's smoking thing was an oversight by bethesda but i can actually rationalize glory's and nick's smoking. synths are obviously rebellious as fuck and don't care for the lack of autonomy. They're probably not allowed to smoke in the institute so picking up smoking when they get out is a huge "fuck you" to the man. it's a way for them to start to take control of their own lives. also nick (the original) is a huge noir nerd so of course nick (the synth) wold smoke.

Yeah I’m with you on thinking it’s an oversight, and I’m 99% sure Nick’s smoking habit is part of his personality (from the original human Detective Nick). But I don’t like the idea of smoking as a form of rebellion. I mean I get that it’s a thing, I know, but Glory has already escaped and she works for the freaking Railroad now so I think that’s plenty of rebellion. Smoking to say “fuck the Man” is just petty. I don’t personally prescribe to any visions of idealizing/glorifying smoking or making it look cool/rebellious (and I know that’s not what you were implying either), I really hate cigarettes for personal reasons and I don’t like making any excuses for why someone would smoke them, whether it’s an act of rebellion or otherwise. But of course not everyone feels this way, and you could be right, I don’t know.
