I've seen conflicting data (one study said 6 weeks, another recommended 10 days, my vet said 2 weeks) on the appropriate duration of quarantine for panleuk+ kittens.

Seeing as my two disease vector babies are looking like they'll survive (day 6, eating, playing, gaining weight again!), I'm trying to determine the optimal duration of how long they have to remain in Disease Jail and myself in Bleach Hell. Any suggestions or knowledge of definitive protocols?

Kitten tax: Poof (no thoughts, head empty) and Oof (who thinks I'm a terrible kitten-eating monster)

At my shelter, once they were testing negative and asymptomatic we would pull them out of quarantine (new kennel, new bedding, new everything and anything fabric in their old kennel thrown away) and never had any issues. *shrugs* I know they technically can shed very small amounts for quite some time but our standard cleaning protocols removed cross infection risks.

If your vet suggests 2 weeks, I'd probably go with that.

Lost my favorite idiot to feline distemper yesterday. I'm scared for the other two and all we can do is sit and monitor them until Monday.

It was just so sudden. They're all indoor cats, with Ashy coming from a shelter, Riley having been a former stray, and Ivan is my childhood cat.

Ashy was only three and he just crashed so fast. Thursday, cuddly and chatty and hungry. Himself. Friday morning, didn't eat breakfast. Friday evening he couldn't get off the ground and did not come home from the vet.

I'm numb and sad. I don't really feel like I can even really mourn Ash because now I have to be scared of losing the other two. It's just sit and wait and I hate it.

Drogo, the orange floof, is the only one of his siblings still alive. I am numb with the grief and shock of losing S E V E N furbabies in just as many days - four fosters, and three foster failures, siblings Thor, Huginn, and Hnoss. 💔 (Arya, the angry-looking spitfire of a floof pictured behind Drogo, was put to sleep on Monday evening.) Fingers are crossed for Drogo!!! He was vaccinated last Saturday. Unlike the ones we couldn't save (two died so quickly they passed away in my arms; the others we rushed to our local emergency vet for euthanasia), his body temperature SPIKED rather than simply plummeting, which indicates his immune system is kicking in and trying to kick off the Panleukopenia. Yesterday Drogo was under the weather. He held at a steady increased temperature of 104°. Today he went up to 105.1°, but as of this evening he's down to 102.3°, and he was livelier and was even purring while he slept in my arms. This afternoon Huginn flew to his home in the heavens above us. 🖤 Thor was already there, waiting for his brother. There are no words in any language to adequately describe just how heavy the weight of grief is. It is a weight like no other, and only by the grace of God do we somehow manage to keep moving under the staggering weight of the pain of loss. Feline Panleukopenia is so, so deadly...and so, so contagious. So many kittens are suffering and dying from this disease that we have a safe and effective vaccine for - but they aren't surviving long enough to be able to receive the vaccine.
