work accidents (forklifts, man), shark attacks (that's much more rare), armed forces/combat, bear attacks (a little less rare), hippo attacks (somewhat common in areas with hippos) alligator attacks (normal if it's someone from south Louisiana), i could keep going but u get the gist
Hmm I feel like she wouldn’t be around animals much (plus a lot might be extinct by this time period...) and I don’t really want to write a soldier. But work accident, maybe.

'accident' seems like a good common way. a wide variety of ways to lose a limb, dependent on various circumstances obv, if it's scifi, maybe... space.. crash...?? sleek machine disaster. small space cut Big space infection.
Yeah, I’m leaning towards accident. I’m not sure it’s far enough in the future for there to be Lots of space ships. I should probably figure that out.

car accidents are a pretty common source today. somebody's got their arm out the window, the car rolls. so is diabetic neuropathy, but that's more likely to affect the legs first, and would probably add extra complications you don't need/want. osteosarcoma on their humerus/radius/ulna, depending on where you want the amputation to happen. i believe that in cases where the tumor is large enough and ingrained enough, amputation is considered best practice, but don't quote me on that
Part of my premise is that medical technology has come pretty far (I’m basically giving her a Bucky Barnes arm as a “fuck you” to people who’re like ~Bucky Barnes isn’t disabled~) so I’m shying away from a medical cause. The car accident could be good--she’s probably a doctor and I’m thinking it was while she was in school, so maybe she’s coming home exhausted during med school and she has her arm out the window and doesn’t react fast enough when someone hits her.
