Panzer Dragon ———————————————— 1 Machine monster + 1 Dragon monster If this card is destroyed and sent to the GY: You can target 1 card on the field; destroy that target. ———————————————— Can Be Found In: Duelist Alliance (DUEA-EN097), 2015 Mega-Tin Mega Pack (MP15-EN124), Legendary Duelists: Ancient Millenium (LED2-EN047)
Fusion Monsters were the only creatures residing the Extra Deck, called Fusion Deck back then until new types of monsters were added. From then to now Fusion Summon gained considerable improvements over the competition, with summoning methods beyond the use of "Polymerization" as well having more liberties on materials compared to many other Extra Deck strategies. While they might still rely on a card's effect to come out, many Fusion Monsters became quite cheap on their arrival to the point of becoming always accesible under all sorts of circumstances.
"Panzer Dragon" is a monster that despite its low ATK gained a bit of reputation due the posibilities arround its ability. If destroyed by any cause that sends it to the Graveyard, "Panzer Dragon" will select and destroy a card on the field in return. A simple ability that might seem focused on defending against many threats, some of the options arround Fusion Summon makes "Panzer Dragon" not only easy to bring out but able to take advantage of this effect even if our own cards are the cause of its destruction.
Requiring a Machine and a Dragon, "Panzer Dragon" is accesible under various methods to the point that we won't require the materials requested. Many Decks involving "Panzer Dragon" will summon it by "Instant Fusion", a Spell Card aiming towards bringing materials with its effect as well use its demerit to self-destruct "Panzer Dragon" and trigger its effect. If we want to take a traditional approach, the Cyberdark archetype might be our best choice as they combine Machines and Dragons with some Graveyard interactions. While investing resources on a proper Fusion Summon might seem a waste compared to stronger monsters than "Panzer Dragon", it will prepare some revival options thanks to being summoned properly. Trap Cards like "Limit Reverse" and "Call of the Haunted" among others will keep reviving "Panzer Dragon" even in response of various destructive effects, while on the other hand "Falchionβ" will bring it back after taking down an enemy in battle.
The entire purpose of "Panzer Dragon" is to be defeated so can activate its effect, so is really up to the proper circumstances to do so. However, to not limit its uses "Panzer Dragon" will mainly work as material of other monsters instead thanks to "Instant Fusion", making its effect more of a backup plan in case the opponent stops our setups. Other option is to trade it for an opponent's monster with "Creature Swap", as due its effect activates in our Graveyard we can take it down afterwards and destroy another card in return. The final option is for "Panzer Dragon" to battle monsters, and while that will lead to its defeat it can play along effects like "Performapal Whip Snake" or "Limiter Removal" to assure a monster is destroyed before does itself. Since "Panzer Dragon" activates its effect not matter who destroys it, cards like "Dark Hole" and "Torrential Tribute" can take care of all the monsters on the field while "Panzer Dragon" can get rid of a card in the opponent's backrow.
"Panzer Dragon" is a monster with subpar stats and a slow removal effect compared to some alternatives, but that didn't stop it to become a solid addition for some Extra Decks. In most cases that's thanks to "Instant Fusion", summoning "Panzer Dragon" for any goals as its effect provides some coverage if our setups are interrupted. However, investing a bit further arround "Panzer Dragon" makes its effect exploitable thanks to revival options and some support on the field, becoming a constant danger the opponent must be constantly aware. While mainly reduced to a role as materia, "Panzer Dragon" is far from being the best focus towards Fusion Summons, but has some valuable uses for various builds to become a recurring monster.
Personal Rating: B
+ Destroys a card on the field when destroyed + Solid target for "Instant Fusion" as its effect works as coverage + Great revival support if summoned properly
- Poor stats and slow effect compared to many other Fusion Monsters - Will mostly work as material
