The General

Preston walked toward his room after a long day in the Castle. Making sure to survey the settlements that he and the General had helped to established always made for a stressful day. It had only been a month since the Institute and Brotherhood had been taken down and yet it seemed like the Minutemen’s problems had grown, not faded. With the boogeymen gone, the raiders began climbing out of the debris looking to take advantage of the power vacuum that was left.

As he turned into the hole in the wall he called a room, he saw the general sitting at the small table that Preston ate his meals at. It was surprise to see his friend and leader sitting alone in his room. Clearing his throat, he caught the attention of the general who looked up quickly and smiled.

“Ah, Preston, fancy meeting you here.”

“You are in MY room general. Was there something you wanted to talk about? You know my ears are always open if you need me.”

Preston watched as the general walked towards him and couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow. Ever since he’d taken in Shaun, they’d remained in Sanctuary. Preston understood without a doubt that’d the general would need to get reacquainted with his son and had no problem delegating for him while he was on the much-needed vacation. However, now that he was here, it didn’t seem as though the general had arrived on business. What could have been going through his head?

“Preston… in the short time that I have known you, it feels as though we have been friends forever. It is because of that, as well as what you have done to help me find my son, that I have to help you know to.” As the general spoke the smile faded from his face and he rubbed his hands together. With a heavy sigh he continued, “That’s why I have decided to step down as general of the minute men and instate you as the new general.”

Preston faltered for a moment at the words that he’d just heard. There was no way; how could he say something like that. It wasn’t Preston’s place to lead.

“General, I… I-I appreciate the gesture but there is no way-”

“Preston, stop I am already well aware of what you want to say. I have thought long and hard about this. I understand that you are afraid to lead the minute men, but I can’t let you hide behind me any longer. From the moment you gave me the title, you have been charging the Minutemen to a bright future. We both know the only reason I accepted this position in the first place was so that I could find my son. Still, you have been the one leading this motley crew all along with me simply playing backseat driver. I am simply giving you the title you’ve always deserved.”

Preston brought a hand up to his face and rubbed his forehead trying to digest what he had heard. Could he really lead the Minutemen? It was only once the general arrived that things had begun to turn around. How could he be allowed to take over now at such a pivotal point in the Minutemen’s growth. Preston’s thoughts were interrupted by a warm touch on his shoulder. Looking up he saw the general there with a concerned smile on his face.

“You will do great. I’ve known it since the moment you confided in me the pain you felt at losing your original brothers and sister of the minutemen. I assure you have grown so much since then and the love and adoration that you have for the commonwealth will lead them to even greater heights than you have ever imagined.”

Preston felt a knot in his stomach as if he’d been struck. The mixed feelings of happiness and pain of fear left him with such a weight that he’d never felt before. Doing his best, he composed himself before speaking.

“General I…”

“You mean Sole.”

“Yeah… Sole”, Preston said with a small smile. “Sole, I can’t even begin to express how I feel. You are the most important friend I have ever had the honor of having. The only thing I can say… No, the only thing I can do from here on is to make you proud. The Minutemen will lead the Commonwealth to a bright future and will never again stray from the path as long as I draw breath.”

“Now that’s what I like to hear… General”, Sole smiled wide at his friend and pat him on the shoulder before heading to leave. “Don't worry, I’ll be sure to check in. Can’t have you messing up my legacy you know?”

“Yeah, I have some big shoes to fill.”

The Occurrence

It was a warm relaxing day in the Commonwealth and Piper was happy to be in the warm glow. The past few months seem to speed by like a whirlwind for her. Between her helping take down both the Institute and Brotherhood of Steel as well as using her newspaper to blow the lid on the whole story she'd lost all concept of time. Although the civil war between the major players of the Commonwealth had left many of its wastelanders and settlers bewildered, she was right there to bring the truth. It didn't feel like she could print the Publick Occurrences fast enough and Nat worked her hands to the bone passing it around. The best part was that with the increased interest in her newspaper, she was able to turn any profits and donations into an extra pair of hands to help out. The Publick Occurrences, went from simply two sisters trying their best and became four couriers, two new journalists and a new printing press managed by a few of the local Diamondians.

Turning her attention to one of the most honorable, important and downright awesome people in her life, she couldn't help but smile. Who would have thought that a chance meeting with a stranger would lead her to becoming a prominent figure in the life of the one and only Sole. Before she'd met him, she felt like she was doing everything she could to help the people of the wasteland. Yet it was the bravery and tenacity of Sole that truly inspired her to go one step further. It wasn't just enough to bring the truth to the people, but it was necessary to be the catalyst of the change you wanted to see.

"Alright Blue, you've had more than enough prep time, don't you think it's about time to get this interview underway?" Piper inquired tapping the eraser on her pencil against her chin.

Sole turned to Piper with a sheepish grin definitely not ready for the questions that he knew would come. Although they were friends, he knew Piper was a reporter first and after their first interview Sole couldn't help but be nervous.

"You're right. I also appreciate you putting it off for so, long.... Let's get this started huh?"

"Sounds great! So, to start things off, what makes you go by Sole? I'm sure quite a few of our readers don't believe that's your birth name, however this is how you prefer to be addressed. What do you say?"

"Wow, an immediate curve ball. I'd expect nothing less from the Commonwealths number one reporter", Sole said with a chuckle. It was clear that as soon as he agreed to the interview Piper's reporter knob instantly dialed up to eleven. Taking a brief moment to find the right words, Sole continued. "To be honest, it is simply short for Sole Survivor, which unfortunately, is what I am. The time that I actually remember being in the vault may be short, but in the time not only were all my neighbors and friends killed, but so was my beloved. Although I have come to terms with that loss, I would rather not forget. I guess in a way... it is a homage I pay to those who should still be here."

"That's some heavy stuff Blue, I can only imagine what it's like to carry that weight", Piper responded with a heavy heart. Giving Sole a moment to gather himself, she spoke up again. "Some people, myself included, consider you a hero for the feats you've managed so stepping out of the vault. Do you agree?"

"Honestly... no. I do appreciate the kind words and I can understand that I have helped people along the way, however I have been on a selfish venture since the time my eyes opened and I saw the wasteland for the first time."

"Don't say that Blue, I'm sure anyone in your position would have done anything to get their son back. No one blames you for fighting for him, especially with all the good you have done for the people because of it. How can you be selfish when you've helped so much?"

"Piper you're a good friend and an amazing writer. I'm not going to accept that I'm some god sent savior just because my needs aligned with those who needed help. Joining the Minutemen, saving Nick, everything I've done was just happenstance in a journey to find Shaun. I don't know that I would have stood up in the face of these tragedies."

Piper wanted to rebut, but she contained herself. This was an interview and she would be doing a disservice to her readers. Besides, when it came down to it she knew that Sole would be willing to talk more personally at a later point.

"Alright Blue, I still believe you're being humble, but I concede. With that said, I think we should bring this interview to a close", Piper said reaching out a comforting hand to her friend and looking his eyes. "Just one thing before we wrap up. What do you think is next for you and Shaun?"

"Now that's an easy one", Sole exclaimed while giving Piper's hand a warm squeeze. "I'm going to do right by my family... All of my family!"
