Today is an exciting day! In honour of both #IReadCanadianDay and our book club theme this month of bold and courageous hearts, for the first time I'm spotlighting a very special book on BOTH Noodlenuts Instagram accounts that is simultaneously old and new, a classic and refreshingly modern! "The Paper Bag Princess" (1980) is a Canadian classic that launched beloved author Robert Munsch's career, and it's about to celebrate its 40th anniversary in print in just a couple of weeks!! The ultimate tale of self-respect and girl power, it tells the story of Princess Elizabeth, who is all set to marry Prince Ronald when disaster strikes in the form of a fire-breathing dragon. Not only does Princess Elizabeth save the day, though, by defeating the dragon using sheer brain power, she also ditches the ungrateful Ronald, with a line that I won't spoil, but is possibly one of the best in the history of children's lit! On this day dedicated to celebrating Canadian literature in all its glory, don't forget this treasure. Today in @deluxshne’s IG story, she mentioned that her son's favourite story was "The Paper Bag Princess" by Robert Munsch and illustrated by Michael Martchenko. I never want to say this was the book that made me a feminist (cause I think my mom and dad did a pretty good job there) but this was the book that gave me a heroine quite like me. She was tough, tried to fix things and walked away when she recognized the relationship was toxic for her (I may need some refreshers) I heard that Robert Munsch wrote this for his daughter Elizabeth, does anyone know if that is fact or fiction??🤔 . . Swipe Left - "Tatterhood" by Robin Muller was my sister's favourite. She loved the story of beauty and sisterly loyalty. It is always the jealous bond between sisters but Tatterhood, the sisters loved and accepted each other as they were. They did not try to change each other but saw who they really were. I also think it helped that the elder sister was the one who had all the answers - lol though I debate that in real life 😜 . . I want to read these books again and probably going to go home and find my copies.
